SYSTEMIC POLICY ISSUE
Departments of teacher education are revising their programs to meet proposed new licensing standards. These standards increase the scope of practice: elementary K-8 and secondary 5-12. We also have to work within the framework of our institutions' guidelines for general education and outside majors, minors, or concentrations. We feel as teacher educators that we have more to do and teach in less time. Do practicing teachers believe that the larger scope of practice is a good thing? What is essential for beginning teachers to know and be able to do?
