Situation/Case Study:
PARENT/TEACHER ISSUE

Description:
According to the mother the father is deceptive and withholding information on the status of the child. The relationship between the two parents is violent since the custody battle happened last year. The mother broke into the conference last year creating a terrible scene. The mother's language is always abusive and violent. This year she demanded that the teacher not inform the father that she was coming to the conference. The first year teacher is afraid of how to handle the situation on her own.

Hypotheses:
The teacher must feel nervous, fearful, anxious, apprehensive, inexperienced and just plain scared anticipating the potential for a violent confrontation between the father and mother and being caught between the two parents. The teacher feels puzzled and nervous because, a) she doesn't know what she should say legally or ethically regarding the confidentiality of the daughter's status; and b) what is her role at the conference if the two parents get in broiled in a domestic confrontation? The teacher feels frustrated and feels she is jeopardizing the student's trust in her. The teacher is torn in her desire to have all members of the situation be "winners", especially the student. The teacher feels confused and pressured from the mother's demand that she keep the mother's plan withheld from the student and her father. The teacher is overwhelmed with concern for the student.
