Situation/Case Study:
STUDENT BEHAVIOR

Description:
What do I do with the few students who don't respond to any behavior management strategy? Parents do not seem to follow-up on school decision plan; it is a positive discipline plan but it is not followed.

Solutions:
The staff needs to agree on expectations - perhaps use the 185th day. Problem solve how to make up for lost time. Teachers need to constantly model. We cannot blame parents; we need to solve these problems. Use "sharing circle" where students share concerns or issue bin. We need to remember that children need a common sense approach- put things into perspective. They need structure, guidance, and role models. We need to diagnose each problem and meet the child's needs. We need to teach "key values" and teach for understanding. We have lots against us - legal issues, media (no recognition), etc.

Comments:
Group members wanted to focus on the positive rather than the negative aspects of their practice.
