Situation/Case Study:
STUDENT ACADEMIC PROBLEM

Description:
The beginning teacher got a new kid in class. She was from Denmark. She was not fitting in with the other students very well. Back in Denmark she was very popular, good in school, and involved in sports and clubs. Her grades were slipping and she was unhappy. The parents came to school and were concerned about the differences. They wanted advice and recommendations about what to do. They were thinking that maybe she should go to a smaller school or a non-public school. The beginning teacher decided to talk to a few of the better students about how they might involve the new student. The teacher suggested that the students should not all confront the new student at the same time but to spread out their contacts. Soon the girl was being asked to go to the movies with others, was asked out for a pizza and soon the student was making contacts with others in and out of school. A good group of students rallied around this new girl and soon she became a participant.

Solutions:
The group talked about the power students have, and about youth helping youth. The group decided they should check to see what had happened to a support program that used to exist to help new students fit in to the school. They also talked about how you recruit good kids to help in these support programs. Peer support seems to work better than blatant teacher intervention.

Comments:
The group had decided to focus on issues of quality student work and come back this time to talk about that topic. Most forgot to do that and some that were absent never got word of this decision. So when they came back and gave cases most were on something else. The group chose the following case.
