TEACHER ROLE/RESPONSIBILITY

Description:
How can a sense of professionalism be conveyed while still seeming friendly to students?

Hypotheses:
Students are immature and take advantage of too casual approaches. Teacher is inexperienced. New teachers usually start wanting to be friends with their students, which can lead to too much familiarity. Adolescent behaviors can become an issue when professionalism is not conveyed.

Solutions:
Some students you can get closer to than others. You should be yourself but it is easier with some groups of students than others. Teachers need to set boundaries. Teachers need to decide themselves what is acceptable. It's a balancing act between the professional role and personalizing your relationships with students. Some student initiate more friendly relationships. Students will "test" new teachers. They don't know what to expect related to discipline and rewards. Student expectations must be set. Some students know teachers by reputation. They will respond to what they think you are. Teachers need to decide how much they want the students' respect. Focus on your work and your personal style. Students will test until they are sure of the teacher. Establish who you are, draw boundaries. (Make them an ally. Treat them as equals. Get students to help monitor behavior of others in the class. (peer pressure to act correctly).
