PARENT/TEACHER ISSUE

Description:
This teacher works in Special Education. There is a third grade child who has had multiple learning problems and has been receiving services for several years. Recently the doctor has told the parents that the child has minor seizures and she has been medicated for this condition. The mother has always had trouble accepting the disabilities thinking that Special Education classes will "cure" the child. She now sees the seizure medication as that "quick fix" and has requested that the child be retested. The Special Education teacher knows that the child's disabilities are more complex than that. She is concerned that the parent is exerting a great deal of pressure on the child and the child feels helpless. The teacher thinks the parent is in denial and knows from previous experience that the parent needs to be "handled" carefully.
