A student in his initial clinical setting has a first grader in a difficult home situation. Her mother has many personal and family problems; her son died of leukemia and her husband left the family. Consequently, she doesn't take an interest in her daughter's education. The child is already approaching the limit for days missed before the school can press charges against the parent for educational neglect. It is very early in the school year. The teacher doesn't like to but is being forced to take action against the parent. This situation is a difficult one because the teacher has had a better relationship with the parent in the past. How should a teacher handle this situation?
