Graduation Requirements

To be eligible to graduate from a certificate or associate degree program, you must fulfill the following graduation requirements:

HEALTHCARE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS:

• Completion of the University's residency requirement
• Completion of all professional courses within five years of beginning the sequence
• Completion of all program requirements within seven years of admittance to St. Catherine's
• A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0

OTHER CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS:

• Completion of program requirements.
• A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS:

• Completion of all program requirements within seven years of admittance to St. Catherine's
• Completion of the residency requirement of 40 of the last 60 semester credits in residence
• A.S. and A.A.S. degrees only: Completion of all professional courses within five years of beginning the sequence
• A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0

ASSOCIATE DEGREE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES CORE REQUIREMENTS:

• Written/Oral Composition and Communication - ENGL 1100
• Humanities - two credits in literature (ENGL 2100, 2500 or 2982) and two credits in art (ART 1020, 1300, 1500, 2982)
• Natural Science and Mathematics - six credits (may be taken in biology, chemistry, ecology, mathematics or physics)
• Theology - two credits
• Social and Behavioral Science - eight credits (PSYC 1000, SSCS 1000 and two other credits in social science or history electives)
• Philosophy - PHIL 2000
• Core Integrated Learning (CIL) course - two credits

At least four additional credits of liberal arts and sciences are required for the A.A.S. degree and the A.S. degree. Individual programs may require specific credits in the liberal arts and sciences. You are encouraged to refer to your program's curriculum guide for program-specific credit requirements.

For information about the two credit minimum requirement for Core Integrated Learning (CIL), refer to the Academic Programs, Institutes and Centers section of this catalog.

A student who fails to meet minimal grade requirements in a program-required liberal arts and sciences course will not graduate until she or he has done one of the following:

• Reregistered for and satisfactorily repeated the entire course (if the course is not offered for variable credit) or the necessary segments of the course (if the course is offered for variable credit), or
• Satisfactorily completed a course elsewhere and transferred the credits to St. Catherine University. NOTE: Students should have such courses approved prior to registration to be sure that these credits will transfer and fulfill the requirements for graduation.

Students must take liberal arts and sciences courses in the order prescribed by the University and the student's program director.

BACCALAUREATE DEGREE PROGRAMS:
The University offers four-year programs in the liberal arts and sciences, or in the liberal arts and sciences with professional preparation, leading to the bachelor of arts (B.A.) or the bachelor of science (B.S.) degree. Candidates for a B.A. or B.S. degree must fulfill the following graduation requirements:

• A minimum of 130 semester credits including: a) completion of the liberal arts core requirements for either the B.A. or B.S. degree, as appropriate to the major; b) acceptance into and completion of the requirements for an approved major
• Demonstration of required proficiencies in writing and information and technology
• Completion of the residency requirement of 48 of the last 64 semester credits in residence*
• Completion of an Intent to Graduate form
• A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0

*Candidates for a B.S. degree enrolled in the RN-BS Degree Completion section are required to complete a minimum of 30 semester credits in residence. This requirement is reduced to 26 semester credits for RN-BS students who have completed a previous baccalaureate degree.

BACCALAUREATE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES CORE REQUIREMENTS
The following requirements apply to students seeking either a B.A. or a B.S. degree in the College for Women who have not completed an A.A. degree or the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum prior to enrolling at St. Catherine University. Additional requirements for each degree are listed under "Additional requirements. . ."

• Writing Requirement (see Required Proficiencies)
• Information and Technology Proficiency (see Required Proficiencies)
• CORE courses - CORE 1000 or CORE 2000 The Reflective Woman and CORE 3990 The Global Search for Justice
• History - one course
• Literature in English - one literature course that involves careful reading of any literary genre written in or translated into English. Must bear English Department designation. (Neither creative writing nor expository writing courses fulfill this requirement.)
• Fine Arts - one course from among the following: art, creative writing, music, theater or classical mythology. Special rules apply for music lessons and ensembles.
• Philosophy - one course, excluding PHIL 2100 and PHIL 2150
• Theology - one course. (This course must be a course that offers students an intellectual account of some of the key elements of Christian theological tradition. See the Theology section of this catalog for more information.)
• Foreign Language - demonstration of equivalency through elementary level II by completion of the second semester elementary course at St. Catherine University . American Sign Language (ASL) satisfies this requirement. Satisfied by two years of high school course work in the same language, with a minimum grade of C-.
• Health and Fitness - completion of EXSS 1100
• Social Science - one course from among the following: anthropology, economics, geography, political science, psychology or sociology, except ECON 2200 or 2250 or PSYC 2050
• Scientific Reasoning and Discovery - one course with a laboratory and/or field component chosen from biology, chemistry, geology or physics
• Mathematics or statistics - one course, selected from ECON 2200 or 2250, PSYC 2050 or any MATH course numbered 1000 or higher, except MATH 1110, 2500 and 2510
• Critical Studies of Race and Ethnicity (CRST) or Women's Studies (WOST) - one CRST or WOST course or one CRST or WOST cross-listed course.  See the CRST and WOST sections of this catalog for the complete listing of available courses

Additional requirements for the B.A. degree:

• Foreign Language - demonstration of equivalency through intermediate level I by completion of the first semester intermediate course at St. Catherine University . American Sign Language (ASL) satisfies this requirement. Satisfied by three years of acceptable high school course work in the same language, with a minimum grade of C-.
• Philosophy or Theology - one additional course

Additional requirements for the B.S. degree:

• Mathematics, Laboratory Science or Social Science - two additional courses from any of these three categories

Contact the Registrar's Office if you believe you have language skills sufficient to meet the language requirements (for example, native speakers from another country for whom English is a second language).

BACCALAUREATE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES CORE REQUIREMENTS: PREVIOUS A.A. DEGREE

The following requirements apply to students who completed an Associate of Arts degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) from a regionally accredited, degree-granting institution prior to enrollment at St. Catherine University.

• Theology - one course

BACCALAUREATE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES CORE REQUIREMENTS: PREVIOUS COMPLETION OF MINNESOTA TRANSFER CURRICULUM

The following requirements apply to students who completed the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum at a MnSCU institution with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale) prior to enrollment at St. Catherine University.

• CORE 2000 The Reflective Woman
• CORE 3990 Global Search for Justice
• Theology - one course
• Health and Fitness - completion of EXSS 1100
• Proficiency in a second language as required by the degree and program

BACCALAUREATE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES CORE REQUIREMENTS: RN - BS DEGREE COMPLETION SECTION

The following requirements apply to students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in the RN - BS Degree Completion section.

• Theology - one course
• Biomedical Ethics
• One among: History/Fine Arts/Literature/Second Language/Global Cultures

The following requirements apply to students who already hold a baccalaureate degree and are pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in the RN - BS Degree Completion section.

• CORE: A combined Reflective Woman and Global Search for Justice course
• Statistics
• Theology - one course
