THE CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
The College of St. Catherine awards the certificate of completion for several programs of study. These programs range from the vocational to the professional level and equip students with specialized knowledge, skills and decision-making competencies necessary for working in a variety of settings.

THE ASSOCIATE DEGREE
The College of St. Catherine awards the associate of arts (A.A.), associate of science (A.S.) and the associate of applied science (A.A.S.) degrees to students upon successful completion of academic requirements. Upon receiving the A.S. or A.A.S. degree, the graduate of one of the health-care programs is prepared to accept an entry-level position in the major field. The A.A. degree program is intended to prepare students for enrollment in a four-year baccalaureate program.

THE BACCALAUREATE DEGREE
The bachelor of arts (B.A.) degree is offered by every major field at the college. Additionally, the bachelor of science (B.S.) degree is offered within certain majors as an alternative to the B.A., at the option of the student. The B.A. and B.S. degrees differ in terms of the liberal arts requirements that must be fulfilled to complete the degree, and major requirements may differ as well. (See core graduation requirements.) In cases where students choose to double-major, they will declare the degree choice at the time the major is declared. In the case of double majors that offer different degrees, students earn the bachelor of arts.

The Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC)
As part of the ACTC, St. Catherine's offers its students in the Baccalaureate Day Program the possibility of registering for courses at Augsburg College, Hamline University, Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas. St. Catherine's students may cross-register through the ACTC subject to the following guidelines:
    • Only full-time undergraduate students registered for at least 12 semester credits on their home campus day program are eligible to register for exchange courses.
    • Only one course per semester may be taken on an exchange basis. Additional exchange courses are permitted as exceptions when required by major field scheduling.
    • Students may not cross-register for a course that is offered on their own campus.
    • Liberal arts core requirements are to be taken at St. Catherine's with the provision that one such liberal arts course may be taken at each of the other colleges. Exempted are foreign language sequences not offered at St. Catherine's, which may be completed in their entirety at the same ACTC school.
    • For ACTC exchange courses in the major and minor, students must gain written approval of their home campus department chair.
    • If a student does not register for a desired ACTC course during the normal registration period, she may not add the course until the first day of class, when she must secure the instructor's signature on her St. Catherine's Drop/Add form.

Courses available through the Associated Colleges are listed on each institution's Web site. Links to the ACTC institutions' Web sites are included on St. Catherine's Web site. The ACTC exchange operates only during the fall and winter semesters and not during January or the summer.

    MAJORS AVAILABLE THROUGH ACTC
The following major fields of study are available to College of St. Catherine baccalaureate day students through a cooperating agreement with the other colleges of the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (Augsburg College, Hamline University, Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas). Students pursuing majors at another ACTC college will need to fulfill St. Catherine's requirements for the bachelor of arts degree. Consult the section on Required Proficiencies for rules that apply to majors completed at other ACTC schools.

    Dual Degree Programs
St. Catherine's students may earn dual bachelor's and master's degrees in several professional areas. Following two to three years of liberal arts and pre-professional course work at St. Catherine's, a student may transfer to a cooperating program at another school or campus. After one to two years in the advanced program, a St. Catherine's bachelor's degree is awarded, and after one or two additional years, a master's degree is conferred from the cooperating school. Admission to the College of St. Catherine and completion of the prerequisite courses does not guarantee admission to the graduate program. Dual degree programs are available in engineering (Washington University, University of Minnesota) occupational therapy (College of St. Catherine) and physical therapy (College of St. Catherine). For more details, see Preprofessional Programs.

    Global Studies
The College of St. Catherine is strongly committed to helping students integrate study-abroad experiences into their educational plans. The benefits of international education are many: gaining insight into other cultures, developing fluency in foreign languages, learning to treasure a global perspective and forming international friendships. Regardless of the reasons students choose to study abroad, their experiences in other countries unquestionably benefit their personal, academic and career goals.

Semester and yearlong programs, as well as January and summer options, are available the world over. Programs available to St. Catherine's students are academically sound and provide strong support services as well as opportunities for integration into the host culture. Students often choose to live with host families or in international residence halls on foreign campuses. Although students are strongly encouraged to study foreign languages while overseas, programs are available in which classes are taught in English, even in non-English-speaking countries.

Students may meet The Global Search for Justice course requirement through participation in designated semester-abroad programs or through St. Catherine's January-term Global Search courses. Opportunities for foreign study during January are available through St. Catherine's own programs abroad as well as through the college's affiliation with HECUA (Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs) and UMAIE (the Upper Midwest Association for Intercultural Education). The latter is a consortium of seven colleges offering approximately 30 different January programs with sites in all parts of the world. Finally, many summer study options are available, including short-term summer courses offered by a variety of study abroad programs.

With advance planning, students in nearly any major can participate in an approved study abroad program while making normal progress toward graduation. The Office of Global Studies coordinates program advising and approval in cooperation with academic departments. Students may obtain program descriptions and applications in the Office of Global Studies (see Policy on Eligibility for Study Abroad in this catalog).

All credit-bearing programs must be approved by the Office of Global Studies prior to departure to ensure transfer of credit to the college transcript. The amount of credit a St. Catherine's student can earn on study abroad (or domestic) programs toward her bachelor's degree is limited to two full-time semesters plus one January or summer term. This restriction does not apply to courses sponsored by the College of St. Catherine and taught by College of St. Catherine faculty; for these courses there is no limit.

To begin the planning process, and to ensure academic credit and the application of financial aid, students must meet with an advisor in the Office of Global Studies. A study abroad advisor will help students select approved and appropriate study abroad programs as well as offer advice throughout the application and predeparture period. The Office of Global Studies provides a mandatory orientation program as well as liaison services while students are overseas and re-entry programming for students returning to campus after a sojourn abroad.

Deadlines for application are March 1 for fall semester or year programs, and October 1 for winter semester programs. Some programs have earlier deadlines or rolling admissions policies; check with the Office of Global Studies.

Sisters of St. Joseph College Student Exchange Program
Students who attend one of the 11 colleges sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph may participate in the Sisters of St. Joseph College Consortium (SSJCC) Student Exchange Program. The Program offers students the opportunity to enrich their educational experience by studying for a semester or a year at a member campus. In addition to St. Catherine's, the colleges in the consortium are: Aquinas College, Milton, Mass.; Avila College, Kansas City, Mo.; Chestnut Hill College, Philadelphia, Pa.; Elms College, Chicopee, Mass.; Fontbonne College, St. Louis, Mo.; Mater Dei College, Ogdensburg, N.Y.; Mount St. Mary's College, Los Angeles, Calif.; Nazareth College of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y.; Regis College, Weston, Mass.; and the College of St. Rose, Albany, N.Y.

In addition to the benefits of diverse student populations and geographic areas and increased exposure to faculty specialists and curricula, the SSJCC exchange program ensures a continuation of the Sisters of St. Joseph tradition in higher education. This tradition is marked by a high priority for intellectual excellence, commitment to religious values, an openness to change, and a caring community sensitive to emerging individual and global needs.

Students who have completed at least 24 semester credits at one of the member colleges and maintain a 2.50 GPA are eligible to apply to participate in this exchange program. Students plan their exchange programs with their academic adviser. For additional information, contact the Office of Academic Advising.

Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA)
A consortium of mostly upper Midwest colleges and universities, HECUA sponsors a wide range of semester and short-term off-campus field learning programs for undergraduates. Diverse in their content and geographic location, HECUA programs are designed so that a particular city or metropolitan area provides a window for exploring issues of the larger society. Issues discussed include contemporary life, the effects of globalization, links between poverty and inequality, and how to bring about social change.

HECUA programs give students the chance to bridge their academic learning with direct experiences of the urgent social challenges facing our society. Programs take students into urban communities to test academic theories in the real world. Students develop critical analysis and hands-on skills for creating social change through field study or internships.

Programs require all students to actively participate in their own learning and contribute to the learning of the whole group. Students meet frequently for group seminars and discussions. Students complete an independent study project during the semester as part of the seminars.

Students earn credits for successfully completing the course work in a HECUA semester, summer or January program. Application of these credits toward their graduation requirements is arranged in consultation with the HECUA campus representative and the Office of Global Studies. In addition, designated HECUA programs have been approved to fulfill the GSJ requirement.

Application deadlines: March 1 for study in the fall term. October 1 for study in the winter term. Students are advised to begin planning in advance for their anticipated term of study.

Additional information about HECUA and all its student programs is available on the Web at www.hecua.org. Interested students should contact CSC HECUA representative Mary Wagner at mmwagner@stakate.edu or (651) 690-6843 or the Global Studies staff for further information. Programs are open to all majors.

    Antonian Scholars Honors Program
To graduate as an Antonian Scholar, students must successfully complete the six requirements of the program, one of which is an independently researched senior honors project. A student also must maintain a 3.5 grade point average both overall and in the major. The Antonian Scholars Honors Program offers students of superior ability an opportunity to study and work with each other in a specially designed program of liberal arts studies. One of the goals of the program is to offer an intellectual challenge to women and to give them opportunities to build stimulating and supportive relationships with peers and faculty. In addition to the academic program, Honors Program students enjoy social and cultural activities in their own student organization.

To deepen the love of learning and to provide the opportunity for independent scholarship, students in the program enroll in special honors seminars and complete a series of honors contracts in conjunction with regular courses in the curriculum. In the senior year, students research, complete and present to the public, under the direction of a faculty member, an independent research project.

Among the privileges of membership are priority registration, access to space for Honors Program students, opportunity to present research at regional and national conferences, and participation in National Collegiate Honors Council Honors Semesters. Upon completion of the program, Antonian Scholars are recognized at commencement and given a special diploma.

First-year students and sophomores in the baccalaureate Day Program who have achieved a 3.5 cumulative grade point average are eligible to apply for membership in the program. Applicants submit a faculty recommendation with their own written application. A committee of faculty members charged with oversight of the Antonian Scholars Honors Program selects students for membership. For further information, contact the Honors Program Director.
