Program: Spanish
Program Code: (SPAN)

Program Faculty:
Burdell, Cruz*, White (*department chair)

Program Description:
The Spanish program aims to develop in students effective linguistic and cultural communication in a Spanish-speaking environment. The courses are designed to develop and maintain Spanish proficiency and to provide cultural awareness and sensitivity. The appropriate sequencing of courses is important for a student to achieve the requisite linguistic skill and cultural knowledge.

All courses are taught in Spanish. Foreign study, travel or residence is highly recommended. During January, the Spanish department sponsors study abroad in Mexico alternately with study abroad in Spain. Native Spanish-speaking assistants in the department provide opportunities to converse in Spanish during regularly scheduled class conversation practice and the conversation table. Spanish Club offers further experiences to interact in a Spanish-speaking environment.

A Spanish major or minor needs to plan her courses and sequencing with her Spanish departmental advisor. To build and maintain Spanish language proficiency, students should plan a minimum of one course in Spanish per semester. The department also welcomes native Spanish speakers and designs a program with them to meet their needs and interests. The Spanish major and minor are available in the Day Program. Spanish elementary and intermediate level courses are offered in summer and in Weekend College.
