Program: Phlebotomy Program
Program Code: (PHL)

Program Faculty:
Mumm* (*program director)

Program Description:
This program is designed to meet the continued need for trained phlebotomists. A phlebotomist is a healthcare worker who is able to obtain and prepare quality blood samples for laboratory testing. The program addresses proper technique of sample collection and processing, as well as basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and the study of disease processes. In addition, the students review and discuss proper communication techniques, phlebotomist-client and coworker relationships and medicolegal ethics.

The program consists of three courses offered over one semester. The first course follows a lecture and student laboratory format that includes hands-on phlebotomy experience. The second course consists of clinical experiences and skill development at an off-campus medical facility. The third course is a program-required medical terminology course. The course is offered during daytime hours.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be awarded a certificate and will be qualified to work as phlebotomists in healthcare settings. In addition, graduates are qualified to take a national certification examination administered by either the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, Inc., (NCA) or the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). After successful completion of this examination, the individual will become either a CLPlb (NCA) or PBT (ASCP). The phlebotomy certificate program is approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) located at 8410 Bryn Mawr Avenue, Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631; (773) 714-8880.
