COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

LIS 1000 FOUNDATIONS OF LIBRARY SERVICE: THE URBAN LENS
Introduction to the history, philosophy and principles of service in the American Public Library. Analyses of the role public libraries play in urban communities. Examination of competencies required for library careers. Six hours per week of practicum in computer applications in libraries required.

LIS 1100 TECHNICAL SERVICES IN PUBLIC LIBRARIES
Introduction to collection management including selection, acquisition, cataloging, classification, processing, and collection maintenance. Six hours per week of practicum required.

LIS 1200 COMMUNICATION AND PUBLIC SERVICES
Introduction to public services provided by libraries including circulation, readers’ advisory, reference, outreach, and children and young adult services. Oral and written communication skills are stressed. Six hours per week of practicum required.

LIS 1300 THE URBAN LIBRARY: COMMUNITY LENS
Analysis of the demographics and cultural practices of diverse communities served by public libraries. Focus on collaboration of libraries with community organizations.

LIS 1050, 1060 HMONG FOR LIBRARY PARAPROFESSIONALS I & II
Hmong Language instruction developing functional competency necessary to be successful in the workplace setting, as a library paraprofessional.

ASL 1050, 1060 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE FOR LIBRARY PARAPROFESSIONALS I & II
American Sign Language instruction developing functional competency necessary to be successful in the workplace setting, as a library paraprofessional.

ENGL 1050, 1060 ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE FOR LIBRARY PARAPROFESSIONALS I & II
Prepares non-native speakers of English for the reading, writing, and vocabulary skills necessary for success in the Urban Library Program.

SPAN 1050, 1060 SPANISH FOR LIBRARY PARAPROFESSIONALS I & II
Spanish instruction developing functional competency necessary to be successful in the workplace setting, as a library paraprofessional.
