COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

SON 1510 INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL ULTRASOUND I 1 Cr.
This course will provide an initial exposure to an ultrasound work environment by shadowing in a facility. You will be able to grasp the role of the clinical sonographer in diagnostic medicine and the relationship of treating patients. Prerequisites: Admission to the sonography program.

SON 1520 Introduction to clinical ultrasound II 2 Cr.
This course is designed to provide the basic concepts of patient care, including the consideration of the physical and psychological needs of the patient and family. You will learn routine and emergency patient care as well as infection control precautions. Prerequisite: Admission to the sonography program and successful completion of prior courses in the program progression.

SON 1530 INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL ULTRASOUND III 2 Cr.
This course is offered in the first summer term. It combines lectures, discussions, demonstrations and scanning practice sessions. The course includes hands-on, laboratory-based introduction to ultrasound scanning principles and techniques with an intensive introduction to abdominal, pelvic and vascular anatomy in preparation for your clinical internship that begins in the fall of the second year of the program. Prerequisites: Admission to the sonography program and successful completion of prior courses in the program progression.

SON 1600 ABDOMEN I LECTURE 2 Cr.
This course is an introduction to abdominal ultrasound. You will have comprehensive discussions of cross sectional anatomy, liver, biliary, pancreas, urinary system, spleen anatomy, abdominal vasculature, and physiology. Prerequisites: Admission to the sonography program.

SON 1610 ABDOMEN I LAB 1 Cr.
This course is an introduction to scanning the anatomy of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and kidney. You will gain experience through participation in scanning labs.

SON 1700 OB/GYN I LECTURE 2 Cr.
This course is an introduction to female pelvic anatomy. You will have comprehensive discussions of pelvic anatomy, physiology, and clinical indications for pelvic scanning. Prerequisites: BIOL 2400; SON 2010, 1060, 1061.

SON 1710 OB/GYN I LAB 1 Cr.
This course establishes the basic foundation for the imaging technique and interpretation of the female pelvis. You will gain experience through lab participation. Prerequisites: BIOL 2400; SON 2010, 1060, 1610.

SON 1800 ABDOMEN II LECTURE 2 Cr.
This course will provide you with an understanding of the pathology of the liver, biliary, pancreas, spleen, urinary system, and abdominal vasculature. This course is a continuation of the skills and knowledge acquired in SON 1600. Prerequisite: SON 1600.

SON 1810 ABDOMEN II LAB 1 Cr.
This course provides you with greater understanding of scanning the abdominal section. This is a continuation of the skills and knowledge acquired in SON 1610. You will gain greater experience and knowledge through participation in the scanning labs. Prerequisite: SON 1610.

SON 1900 OB/GYN II LECTURE 2 Cr.
This course builds on the knowledge and skills learned in SON 1700. You will have discussions on first, second, and third trimester normal anatomy as it applies to scanning. Prerequisites: SON 1700, 1710.

SON 1910 OB/GYN II LAB 1 Cr.
This course will provide you with greater understanding of scanning pelvic anatomy and fetal anatomy. This is a continuation of the skills and knowledge acquired in SON 1710. You will gain greater experience by lab participation. Prerequisites: SON 1700, 1710.

SON 2010 ULTRASOUND PHYSICS AND INSTRUMENTATION I 4 Cr.
You will focus on the underlying principles of physics and basic concepts critical for developing skills in the use of diagnostic ultrasound. Prerequisite: Admission to the sonography program.

SON 2020 ULTRASOUND PHYSICS AND INSTRUMENTATION II 4 Cr.
You will apply a more profound understanding of ultrasound physics concepts so that the relationship of the physics fundamentals to the quality of the diagnostic ultrasound is understood. Prerequisites: Admission to the sonography program and SON 2010.

SON 2050 SCANNING LAB 3 Cr.
The course will provide you with more scanning experience and will be a continuation of the skills and knowledge learned from previous courses. Prerequisites: SON 1700, 1710, 1800, 1810, 2020; BIOL 2410.

SON 2120 ABDOMEN III LECTURE 2 Cr.
This course is a continuation of abdominal ultrasound and will provide you with comprehensive discussions on small parts anatomy, which includes the thyroid, breast, prostate, and scrotum. Prerequisites: SON 1800, 1810.

SON 2130 ABDOMEN III LAB 1 Cr.
This course provides you with comprehensive scanning skills in all areas of the abdomen, including small parts. You will optimize your scanning abilities through participation in the labs. Prerequisites: SON 1800, 1810.

SON 2220 OB/GYN III LECTURE 2 Cr.
This course is a continuation of SON 1700 and SON 1900 and will provide you with comprehensive discussions about third trimester pregnancy, fetal anomalies, and biophysical profiles. Prerequisites: SON 1900, 1910.

SON 2230 OB/GYN III LAB 1 Cr.
You will gain experience with obstetric scanning and apply what you have learned in the course work on clinicals. Prerequisites: SON 1900, 1910.

SON 2300 INTRODUCTION TO VASCULAR ULTRASOUND 2 Cr.
The anatomy, physiology and pathology of the arterial and venous circulation systems are covered in this course. Noninvasive vascular instrumentation, protocols and techniques are introduced. The principles of hemodynamics and the physics and use of continuous wave, pulse and color Doppler ultrasound are covered in this course. Prerequisite: SON 2210.

SON 2610-2630 CLINICAL ULTRASOUND I-III 21 Cr.
These courses provide the opportunity to apply didactic knowledge to the clinical environment. You will work under the guidance of registered sonographers in hands-on ultrasound scanning in abdominal, OB/GYN, vascular and superficial parts ultrasound. You will be at your clinical internships
21⁄2 days per week in SON 2610, three to four days per week in SON 2620 and four days per week in SON 2630. Prerequisites: Admission to the sonography program and successful completion of prior courses in the program progression. SON 2610 must be taken prior to SON 2620. SON 2620 must be taken prior to SON 2630.
