COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

EDUC 2070 TEACHERS AS LEADERS FOR A CHANGING SOCIETY 4 CR.
This course will introduce you to the early childhood, elementary or secondary classroom through preclinical experiences in a multicultural setting, exploration of teaching as a career choice, awareness of the pluralistic school and society, basic instructional technology and communication skills. Up to 40 hours of fieldwork required. Prerequisite for all education courses. Also available in Weekend College.

EDUC 2090 GENERAL METHODS: KÐ12, SECONDARY 4 Cr.
In this course you will learn educational methods in six areas: planning for instruction, strategies for implementing instruction, evaluating and reporting techniques, and instructional technology. Up to 40 hours of fieldwork in a multicultural setting is required. Prerequisite with concurrency: EDUC 2070.

EDUC 2110 FOUNDATIONS AND THEORIES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION 2 CR.
In this course you will study the historical roots and contemporary manifestations of early childhood education theories and practices. You will also learn about the research of educators and child psychologists who have made significant contributions to current understanding of the young child. Theories regarding the learning modes and stages of development in the typical and atypical young child will be presented. Through your fieldwork experience you will make practical applications of these theories in contemporary inclusive childcare programs. Prerequisite with concurrency: EDUC 2070.

EDUC 2490 SCHOOL HEALTH AND CHEMICAL HEALTH 1 Cr.
In this two-module distance learning course you will learn about student health issues in the classroom; the teacherÕs role in observing, responding, referring and reporting; support services in the school; alcohol, tobacco and other drug use in society; approaches to and resources for chemical health promotion and positive youth development; legal considerations for teachers. Prerequisite with concurrency: EDUC 2070.

EDUC 2530 CREATIVE DRAMA AND CHILDRENÕS THEATER 4 Cr.
An investigation of the ways of teaching drama to children. Designed to help you gain a better understanding of the philosophy of creative drama, to gain a deeper understanding of children, to enjoy creative drama via the role of a player, to strengthen personal awareness and imagination and to have a beginning experience as a creative drama leader. Same as THR 2530.

EDUC 2560 INCLUSION OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN THE REGULAR CLASSROOM 4 CR.
This course is designed to enable you to work successfully in classrooms that include learners who have physical or emotional handicaps. You will learn to recognize specific impairments, develop goals and strategies for the learner and acquire familiarity with laws concerning the handicapped. Prerequisite: EDUC 2070.

EDUC 2800 GENERAL METHODS: ELEMENTARY 2 Cr.
In General Methods you will focus on five major areas: planning for instruction, strategies for implementing instruction, evaluating and reporting techniques, classroom management, instructional technology. Up to 40 hours fieldwork in a multicultural setting are required. Also available in Weekend College. Prerequisite with concurrency: EDUC 2070.

EDUC 3010 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN MATHEMATICS 2 Cr.
As an elementary teacher you will be responsible for providing a learning experience in a classroom that enables students to engage in meaningful tasks in mathematics instruction. There are many facets to this learning environment of which an elementary teacher must be aware Ñ knowledge of the discipline, planning the lesson, assessment, follow-up. This course is designed to give you an opportunity to read, discuss and design activities to enhance student learning. Up to 40 hours of fieldwork required (in conjunction with EDUC 3030 and EDUC 3050). Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2800, MATH 2500.

EDUC 3030 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN SCIENCE 2 Cr.
In this course you will learn the basic framework of instructional skills, techniques, methods for use in the elementary science classroom. You will also engage in actual classroom experience in science at the elementary school level. Up to 40 hours of fieldwork required (in conjunction with EDUC 3010 and EDUC 3050). Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2800.

EDUC 3050 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN SOCIAL STUDIES 2 CR.
The goals for this course correspond with the licensure requirements for all elementary teachers in social studies with the explicit purpose of providing you with opportunities to apply fundamental social studies concepts and the connections among them in course assignments. The course content and learning activities focus on experiences designed to prepare you with competencies and skills related to tools of inquiry and problem solving: the history, government and culture of Minnesota-based American Indian tribes as integrating concepts throughout the elementary curriculum; and the environment as an integrating concept through understanding of how to use the sciences, social sciences, mathematics, arts and communication in the exploration of environmental issues and topics. Up to 40 hours of fieldwork required (in conjunction with EDUC 3010 and 3030). Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2800.

EDUC 3080 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN ART FOR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS 2 CR.
Art is an important component of the elementary curriculum. In this course, you will learn the basic framework of instructional skills, techniques and methods of teaching art in the elementary school. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2800.

EDUC 3110 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN MUSIC 1 Cr.
Teachers in elementary schools must be prepared to teach music to their young learners. In this course, you will learn the basic framework of instructional skills, techniques and methods of teaching music at the elementary school level. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2800.

EDUC 3130 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION 1 CR.
Developing healthy physical habits is a lifelong disposition. In this course, you will learn the basic framework of instructional skills, techniques and methods of teaching physical education and health at the elementary school level. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department,

EDUC 3150 CHORAL CONDUCTING I 4 Cr.
Same as MUS 3150. Prerequisite: MUS 1140.

EDUC 3160 CHORAL CONDUCTING II 4 Cr.
Same as MUS 3160. Prerequisite: EDUC 3150 or MUS 1150.

EDUC 3200 INFANT AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT 2 Cr.
In this course you will receive an overview of infant development (birth to 30 months) with emphasis on sensory, motor and social emotional components. Through class activities you will focus on attachment behaviors, maternal and infant healthcare legislation, toy analysis and identification of atypical development. Up to 15 hours of fieldwork required. Prerequisite: EDUC 2110.

EDUC 3230 TEACHING MUSIC IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I 2 CR.
Methods and materials used in the teaching of vocal music in grades K-6, playing of rhythm and melody instruments, introduction to Orff, Kodaly and Richards techniques/methods. Prerequisite: Music major or permission of instructor.

EDUC 3250 FOCUS STUDIES IN ELEMENTARY ART EDUCATION 2 CR.
To prepare for your position as a K-12 visual arts teacher, you will examine the historical base for art education and investigate specific theories and philosophies of teaching and learning as these apply to elementary art education. You will examine how artistic learning occurs, explore motivational and evaluative strategies and classroom management techniques. This course meets the state standards for K-12 licensure for teachers of art and is a requirement for all art education majors seeking K-12 licensure. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2090.

EDUC 3290 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN KINDERGARTEN EDUCATION 2 CR.
In this methods course you will study early childhood growth and development with an emphasis on the five- and six-year-old child. You will study the child in relation to modes of learning, appropriate management and guidance strategies, and program scheduling. You will build competency in these areas through observations and experiences that expand and make practical the knowledge and understandings gained from lectures, discussions, class assignments and fieldwork. Criteria for developing effective kindergarten programs is based on these learnings and experiences. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2110.

EDUC 3320 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN PREPRIMARY EDUCATION 2 CR.
In this methods course, you will study developmentally appropriate practices used in the education of children from infancy through five years of age. The preprimary child is studied and observed in relation to physical, social, emotional and cognitive growth and development. Through readings, lectures, small group discussions, observations and field experiences, you will gain knowledge and skills in designing learning environments and planning curriculum experiences that foster the growth and development of the young child. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2110.

EDUC 3380 INTRODUCTION TO ADULT EDUCATION AND EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION 4 CR.
In this course you will be presented with the principles of adult education including group dynamics, process and facilitation. The focus is on adult learning styles and appropriate teaching methods and materials. You will discuss the characteristics, requirements and philosophy of Early Childhood Family Education programs. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2070.

EDUC 3450 LITERATURE FOR YOUNG ADULTS 2 Cr.
As a teacher of middle level and secondary students, you will study literature for young adults in grades seven through 12 based on their development and interests. You will become acquainted with transition literature and contemporary adult literature read by young adults. You will learn techniques for promoting reading and how to respond to reading by teenagers in the secondary classroom and through free reading. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2070.

EDUC 3490 EMERGING ARTS AND LITERACY 4 Cr.
In this course you will learn contemporary instructional practices and materials in reading and other language arts; reading as an intellectual process and a communication art related to listening, speaking and writing; opportunities for classroom experience in teaching these areas. You will participate in a literacy lab scheduled for Friday mornings (8 a.m.-noon). Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2070, INDI 2400.

EDUC 3500 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS 4 CR.
Contemporary instructional practices and materials in reading and other language arts; reading as an intellectual process and a communication art related to listening, speaking and writing; opportunities for classroom experience in teaching these areas. Students participate in a literacy lab scheduled for Friday mornings (8 a.m.-noon) from mid-February through April. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2800, INDI 2400.

EDUC 3520 TEACHING RELIGION TO CHILDREN 2 Cr.
To prepare for teaching of religion, you will investigate what is involved in teaching of religion at the elementary level, focusing on the expectations of students and teachers, current strategies and materials used for teaching, and specific content. Observation of a religion lesson and developing prayer services are part of the course work. Offered in alternate years.

EDUC 3530 EXTENDING ARTS AND LITERACY IN GRADES 4-6 2 CR.
Literacy is the art of knowing and expressing human experience using the symbol systems of movement/drama, music, spoken and written language, and visual arts. You will explore ways to integrate the arts into the daily school curriculum. Arts and Literacy in Grades 4-6 is the third in a series of three integrated courses. This course focuses on literacy development in grades 4-6. Prerequisite: EDUC 3490.

EDUC 3540 RELATIONSHIP TECHNIQUES 4 Cr.
In this course you will analyze a variety of relationship techniques for use in the regular classroom, as well as in education-related services and other helping professions. You will discover approaches that best fit your own characteristics and preferred ways of working to help others acquire appropriate social behaviors. Same as PSYC 3540. Prerequisite: EDUC 2070. Not open to first-year students.

EDUC 3550 LITERACY IN THE CONTENT AREAS 2 Cr.
This course is designed to provide you with strategies for integrating reading and writing, listening and speaking tools for learning in the content areas. You will learn ways in which you can make the necessary connections among concepts, ideas and broad subject areas. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2090 or 2800.

EDUC 3650 CURRENT ISSUES IN EDUCATION 2 Cr.
At the conclusion of your student teaching experience, you will examine the educational system in America as it reflects historical trends, various educational philosophies and the current socio-economic environment. Particular attention is given to the pluralistic nature of school and society and the professional and ethical responsibilities of a classroom teacher. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department. Taken concurrently with student teaching.

EDUC 3670 METHODS AND MATERIALS IN WORLD LANGUAGES AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 2 CR.
In this upper division methods course, you will analyze the objectives, sources of materials, and special techniques for teaching foreign language to children in the elementary schools. Prerequisites: Admission to the Education Department, EDUC 2090 or 2800.

EDUC 3700 STUDENT TEACHING AND SEMINAR: PREPRIMARY 4 CR.
Student teaching is the culminating experience in your preparation to become a teacher. You will participate in opening-of-school activities, teaching experience for 180 hours in cooperating schools of the metropolitan area; conferences with cooperating teacher and College supervisor; and seminars arranged by Education Department.

EDUC 3730 STUDENT TEACHING AND SEMINAR: EARLY CHILDHOOD FAMILY EDUCATION 2 CR.
Student teaching is the culminating experience in your preparation to become a teacher. You will participate in opening-of-school activities, teaching experience for 90 hours in cooperating schools of the metropolitan area; conferences with cooperating teacher and College supervisor; and seminars arranged by Education Department.

EDUC 4100 EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTICAL LIFE 1 Cr.
You will learn the goals of coordination of movement, independence, concentration and development of the sense of order as approached through Montessori practical life pedagogy with an emphasis on the cycle of activity and its process, and the analysis of movement involved in the area of practical life.

EDUC 4140 FOUNDATIONS AND THEORIES OF MONTESSORI EDUCATION 3 CR.
This course provides you with the historical and philosophical foundations for understanding MontessoriÕs view of human life and development: physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual. You will focus on the philosophical and educational theories that provide the basis of the Montessori method. You will learn the history of the method and how the principles evolved. Basic principles to be explored also include Montessori classroom management, child development, the prepared environment and the development of the teacher.

EDUC 4150 EARLY CHILDHOOD SENSORIAL EDUCATION 1 Cr.
In this course you will explore the rationale and techniques necessary to ensure development of sensory growth; introduction of materials in sequential order with emphasis on refinement of sensory perception, repetition, control of error and language (three period lesson); and distinct training in presentation techniques.

EDUC 4220 EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC AND MOVEMENT 1 Cr.
You will study music and movement as a developmental process of exploration, absorption and self-expression, with an emphasis on various present and historical cultures. Montessori materials and theory are utilized. Movement includes the development of the body through exploration, cooperative play, rhythms and dance.

EDUC 4260 EARLY CHILDHOOD ART 1 Cr.
You will learn about art as an exploration of media and a means to self-expression with an emphasis on variety. The process of an art activity rather than the product is emphasized. A cultural and historical component is included.

EDUC 4270 EARLY CHILDHOOD SCIENCE 1 Cr.
Observation of scientific phenomena through simple experiments which involve the child, utilizing the childÕs intrinsic interests. The study of biology also is introduced including a division into botany and zoology.

EDUC 4360 EARLY CHILDHOOD MATHEMATICS 2 Cr.
Presenting the basic skills of mathematics using developmental materials. Emphasis on process: from the numbers 1-10 through the decimal system, the operations of arithmetic and memorization of basic facts. Includes supervised practice with materials.

EDUC 4370 EARLY CHILDHOOD LANGUAGE ARTS AND READING 2 CR.
Analysis of language as spoken and written communication. Rationale for the sensory-motor involvement with emphasis on the sequence of skills to be developed to assist the childÕs natural growth toward effective spoken and written communication. Oral language, phonetic analysis, initial writing, handwriting skills, early reading and beginning grammar skills are taught as a foundation for total reading.

EDUC 4380 EARLY CHILDHOOD SOCIAL STUDIES 1 Cr.
Social studies includes exposure to geography and history from the Montessori perspective. An emphasis is placed on the holistic approach.

EDUC 4620/4630/4640 EARLY CHILDHOOD PRACTICUM I, II & III 2 CR. EACH
Supervised internship practicum in approved sites as specified in the American Montessori Society accreditation guidelines. A minimum of three visits to each student during the nine-month practicum, by a College supervisor. NOTE: Practicum I, II and III are offered during the fall, winter and spring terms, respectively. Attendance is required at a supervised weekly practicum seminar with materials, including spontaneous problem solving and support sessions once per week throughout the school year. These courses may be repeated. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Center for Contemporary Montessori ProgramsÕ Montessori program and completion of phase one.

EDUC 4710/4720/4730 EARLY CHILDHOOD PROJECTS I, II & III 1 CR. each
Individualized work on preparing assigned Montessori albums and materials in the areas of practical life, mathematics, sensorial, language, geography and others as assigned. Prerequisites: Acceptance into the Center for Contemporary Montessori ProgramsÕ Montessori program and completion of phase one.

EDUC 4952 or 4954 INDEPENDENT STUDY 2 or 4 Cr.
Prerequisites: Faculty and department chair permission.

EDUC 4992 or 4994 TOPICS 2 or 4 Cr.
The subject matter of the course is announced in the annual schedule of classes. Content varies from year to year but does not duplicate existing courses. Prerequisite: EDUC 2070.
