COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

FREN 1110 ELEMENTARY FRENCH I 4 Cr.
Understanding, speaking, reading and writing functional French for beginners. Introduction to the culture of French-speaking countries. Also offered in Weekend College; meets every week.

FREN 1120 ELEMENTARY FRENCH II 4 Cr.
Continuation of FREN 1110. Also offered in Weekend College; meets every week. Prerequisite: FREN 1110 or its equivalent.

FREN 2110 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH I 4 cr.
Understanding, speaking, reading and writing functional French at a more advanced level. Also offered in Weekend College; meets every week. Prerequisite: FREN 1120 or its equivalent.

FREN 2120 INTERMEDIATE FRENCH II 4 cr.
A fourth semester language class in which you improve your writing, reading and communication in French through an intensive grammar review, vocabulary building exercises, and literary and cultural readings. Prerequisite: FREN 2110 or its equivalent.

FREN 2200 INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH AND FRANCOPHONE CULTURE 4 CR.
Designed as a fifth semester French course in which you develop vocabulary building and phonetic exercises, and learn how to analyze and compare literary texts to the visual arts. Prerequisite: FREN 2120 or its equivalent.

FREN 3050 FRENCH COMPOSITION I 4 Cr.
A writing-intensive introduction to multiple genres of French writing with the goals of improving written and spoken expression, expanding vocabulary, acquiring proofreading skills, and developing critical and stylistic techniques. Prerequisite: FREN 2120 or its equivalent.

FREN 3060 FRENCH COMPOSITION II 4 Cr.
Continuation of FREN 3050 with an introduction to literary analysis. Prerequisite: FREN 3050 or permission of instructor.

FREN 3130 SURVEY OF FRENCH LITERATURE I 4 Cr.
An exploration of the vision du monde in French literary landmarks from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Prerequisites: FREN 3050 and 3060 or instructor permission.

FREN 3140 SURVEY OF FRENCH LITERATURE II 4 Cr.
A further exploration of the vision du monde in French literary landmarks of the 18th through 20th centuries. Prerequisites: FREN 3050 and 3060 or instructor permission.

FREN 3250 FRENCH CIVILIZATION: CONTEMPORARY FRENCH LIFE AND THOUGHT 4 CR.
Introduction to French history and civilization with the goal of understanding past and contemporary French people as well as current sociopolitical issues in France. A diverse selection of readings, films and student presentations included. Prerequisite: FREN 3060 or instructor permission.

FREN 4860 SEMINAR 4 Cr.
Designed as a challenging capstone course for French majors. Its focus varies yearly; emphasis is on careful literary analysis and writing. (Examples of focus: French Women Writers, French Catholic Writers or an in-depth study of one author such as Julien Green.)

FREN 4994 TOPICS 4 Cr.
The subject matter of the course is announced in the annual schedule of classes. Content varies from year to year but does not duplicate existing courses. Prerequisite: FREN 2120 or its equivalent.
