COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
MENS 1201 ENSEMBLE: ST. CATHERINE CHORAL SOCIETY 1 Cr.
A masterworks choir of 70 - 90 mixed voices, composed of students, faculty, staff and community singers. One rehearsal per week (Thursday evenings). Performs two concerts per year, with guest orchestra. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MENS 1401 ENSEMBLE: WOMEN’S CHOIR 1 Cr.
The principal collegiate choral ensemble of St. Catherine’s. The choir performs often throughout the year, both on- and off-campus, including alternate-year concert tours. Recent tours have included Europe, Texas and California. Repertoire is from every style period, with an emphasis on music by contemporary composers, particularly women. Two rehearsals per week. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MENS 1601 ENSEMBLE: MADRIGAL SINGERS 1 Cr.
A small vocal ensemble selected by special audition that meets during some fall semesters and presents the Renaissance Christmas “Feastes.” Auditions are held in mid-September. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MENS 1701 ENSEMBLE: INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES 1 Cr.
Instrumental trios, quartets, quintets, etc., devoted to preparation of music for public performance. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MENS 1711 ENSEMBLE: PIANO ENSEMBLE 1 Cr.
Study and performance of duets, two-piano music and other chamber music that includes piano. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MENS 1720 STUDIO ACCOMPANYING 1 Cr.
Study and performance of piano accompaniments for vocal or instrumental solo repertoire. At least two semesters required for piano majors. Prerequisites: Enrollment is by audition, and a performance-level equivalent to that of a junior piano major is expected.
MENS 1901 ENSEMBLE: MUSIC THEATER WORKSHOP 1 Cr.
Musical and dramatic preparation of a musical show or opera, leading to complete performance with costumes, set and orchestra. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: Participation by audition.
MENS 1911 ENSEMBLE: MUSIC THEATER SCENES 1 Cr.
Musical and dramatic preparation of scenes from musical shows and opera to be presented in public performance. Offered periodically. Prerequisite: Participation by audition.
MUS 1060 BEGINNING CLASS PIANO 1 Cr.
Keyboard instruction in an electronic piano laboratory. Course designed for beginners or students with limited keyboard experience.
MUS 1070 BEGINNING CLASS VOICE 1 Cr.
The fundamentals of singing and speech, including information about the vocal instrument, vocal technique, and how to learn and perform simple songs. Designed for students who wish to learn more about singing for personal pleasure and enrichment in an interactive and supportive group environment. In addition, some exploration of vocal technique as it relates to other areas of endeavor, in particular public speaking. No singing experience or music background required.
MUS 1080 FOUNDATIONS OF MUSIC MAKING 4 Cr.
In this course, intended for those with very little or no background in music, you will learn the basics of reading and writing music and playing the piano. Concepts of music theory, from simple note reading to reading and writing scales and chords, are applied to playing simple songs with chords on the piano.
MUS 1130 MUSIC THEORY I 4 Cr.
Basic materials and structures of music approached through analysis and experience. The four-semester theory sequence integrates sight-singing and keyboard skills with the analysis of harmony, form and contrapuntal procedures from the 16th through the 20th century. Intended for music majors; others by permission. Prerequisite: Concurrent or previous piano study required. Successful placement examination given on the first day of class.
MUS 1140 MUSIC THEORY II 4 Cr.
Continuation of MUS 1130. Prerequisite: MUS 1130 or successful placement examination.
MUS 1150 THE ART OF LISTENING 4 Cr.
Music listening designed for the nonmusic major. Discussion of representative works, trends and events in the history of classical and popular music. Includes works by European and American composers showing intercultural influences and various ethnic and indigenous traditions representative of the great periods of musical art. Also offered in Weekend College.
MUS 1160 JAZZ IN AMERICA 4 Cr.
The origins and history of jazz in the United States. Various phases in the development of jazz style are discussed. Blues, ragtime, dixieland, swing, bop, cool jazz, fusion, as well as other recent developments in jazz performance are investigated. An essential part of the course is the analysis and evaluation of recorded performances by outstanding jazz musicians. Designed for non-music majors as well as majors interested in jazz. Also offered in Weekend College.
MUS 1180 MUSIC OF CULTURES OUTSIDE THE WESTERN TRADITION 4 CR.
A survey of music as a cultural/artistic phenomenon outside the Western European tradition. Includes fifteen separate music cultures around the world, with an in-depth study of the music of Africa and Indonesia. Open to majors and nonmajors.
MUS 1750 ITALIAN DICTION FOR SINGERS 1 Cr.
An introduction to Italian pronunciation rules for singers, utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet. Three Italian songs, or arias, or arie antiche are studied by each student. Special emphasis on problems encountered by the singers. Offered in alternate years.
MUS 1770 FRENCH DICTION FOR SINGERS 1 Cr.
An introduction to French pronunciation rules for singers, utilizing the International Phonetic Alphabet. A guide to the use of the dictionary in the language. Three French art songs are studied by each student. Special emphasis on problems encountered by the singer. Offered in alternate years.

Continuation of MUS 1140. Prerequisite: MUS 1140.
MUS 2140 MUSIC THEORY IV 4 Cr.
Continuation of MUS 2130. Prerequisite: MUS 2130.
MUS 2230 INTRODUCTION TO MUSIC EDUCATION AND RELATED CAREERS 1 CR.
An overview of music education and related careers. Designed to familiarize present and future music education majors with the principles, practices and concerns of the music teaching profession and related vocations. Guest lectures by professional music educators and musicians and field experiences are a major feature of this course as students and professionals become partners in shaping students’ careers.
MUS 2850 THE STRING FAMILY 1 Cr.
Provides acquaintance with the performance of orchestral strings. Offered in alternate years.
MUS 2860 THE WOODWIND FAMILY 1 Cr.
Provides acquaintance with the performance problems of the woodwind family. Major emphasis on one instrument. Offered in alternate years.
MUS 2870 THE BRASS FAMILY AND PERCUSSION 1 Cr.
Provides acquaintance with the performance problems of brass and percussion instruments. Major emphasis on one brass instrument and snare drum. Offered in alternate years.
MUS 3000 PIANO PEDAGOGY I: ELEMENTARY LEVEL 2 Cr.
Basic study of the concepts necessary for individual and group piano teaching at the elementary level. Includes methods, materials, learning theories, technique and studio organization. Primarily for music majors (pianists), piano pedagogy certificate students and piano teachers. Other qualified students may be admitted with the consent of the instructor. Offered in alternate years.
MUS 3010 PIANO PEDAGOGY II: INTERMEDIATE LEVEL 2 Cr.
Study of the concepts necessary for successful individual and group teaching at the intermediate level. Includes repertoire, musical styles, learning theories, lesson plans, ensemble music and bibliography. Primarily for music majors (pianists), piano pedagogy certificate students and piano teachers. Other qualified students may be admitted with the consent of the instructor. Offered in alternate years. Recommended: MUS 3000.
MUS 3050 PIANO PEDAGOGY III: PERFORMANCE PRACTICES 2 CR.
Study of performance practices appropriate to the various musical styles from the Baroque period to the present time. Articulation, dynamics, tempo and rhythmic inflections, pedaling, notation and editions. Primarily for music majors (pianists), piano pedagogy certificate students and piano teachers. Other qualified students may be admitted with the consent of the instructor. Offered in alternate years. Recommended: MUS 3010.
MUS 3100 INTRODUCTION TO VOCAL PEDAGOGY 2 Cr.
A synthesis of acoustics, phonetics, linguistics and physiology applied to the tasks of the singer and voice teacher. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.
MUS 3110 HISTORY AND LITERATURE OF MUSIC I 4 Cr.
An historical investigation of musical style. Non-Western music, ancient and medieval music, the Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Prerequisite: MUS 1140 or permission of instructor.
MUS 3120 HISTORY AND LITERATURE OF MUSIC II 4 Cr.
Continuation of MUS 3110. The late Baroque, Classic and Romantic periods, the 20th century. Prerequisite: MUS 1140. Recommended: MUS 3110 or equivalent.
MUS 3150 CONDUCTING I 4 Cr.
Introduction to conducting and rehearsal technique. Score study and analysis and management of an ensemble program are addressed, in conjunction with literature appropriate for school or church ensembles. Offered in alternate years. Also offered as EDUC 3150. Prerequisite: MUS 1140. Concurrent registration in a major conducted ensemble.
MUS 3160 CONDUCTING II — CHORAL 4 Cr.
Continuation of MUS 3150 for those with a choral emphasis. Advanced conducting and rehearsal technique. Study of performance practice. Survey of choral and choral-orchestral literature. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisites: MUS 3150 Concurrent registration in MENS 1201 or 1401 required of all full-time students enrolled.
MUS 4160 ORCHESTRATION 2 Cr.
Scoring for string, wind and percussion combinations with emphasis on large groups. Ranges, timbres and performance characteristics of string, wind and percussion instruments. Scoring for small and large ensembles of such instruments. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: MUS 2140.
MUS 4260 TEACHING MUSIC IN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL II 2 CR.
A continuation of the study of materials, skills, activities and teaching strategies used in the teaching of vocal music in the elementary grades, K-6, as introduced in EDUC 3230. Offered in alternate years. Prerequisite: EDUC 3230 or by permission of instructor.
MUS 4682 or 4684 DIRECTED STUDY 2 or 4 Cr.
Directed study is provided for students whose unusual circumstances prohibit taking a regularly scheduled course but who need the material of that course to satisfy a requirement. Availability of this faculty-directed learning experience depends on faculty time and may be limited in any given term and restricted to certain courses. Prerequisites: Faculty, department chair and dean approval.
MUS 4752 or 4754 PRACTICUM 2 or 4 Cr.
This course allows you to gain credit for certain non-classroom experiences. Normally open to junior and senior students. Credit is arranged prior to beginning the experience. Prerequisite: Permission of the department chair.
MUS 4760 SENIOR RECITAL 0 Cr.
This course represents all aspects of preparation related to your graduation recital performance. All music majors are required to register for this course during the semester in which graduation recital is scheduled.
MUS 4952 or 4954 INDEPENDENT STUDY 2 or 4 Cr.
Prerequisites: Instructor and department chair permission.
MUS 4992 or 4994 TOPICS 2 or 4 Cr.
The subject matter of the course is announced in the annual schedule of classes. Content varies from year to year but does not duplicate existing courses.
MUSL 1210 HARPSICHORD: ELECTIVE LESSONS 1 Cr.
Designed for piano majors or non-music majors who wish to study harpsichord for credit. Half-hour or 50-minute lessons. A minimum of six hours practice per week is required. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MUSL 1310 PIANO: ELECTIVE LESSONS 1 Cr.
Designed for nonmajors who wish to study piano for credit; also for nonpiano music majors who wish to develop their piano proficiency. Half-hour or 50-minute lessons. A minimum of six hours per week practice is required. Prerequisite: Previous piano experience or completion of MUS 1060.
MUSL 1330 VOICE: ELECTIVE LESSONS 1 Cr.
Designed for nonmajors who wish to study voice for credit; also for nonvocal music majors who wish to develop their singing. Normal minimum requirement three songs (or equivalent) memorized per semester. Half-hour or 50-minute lessons. Prerequisite: Previous vocal experience.
MUSL 1350 ORGAN: ELECTIVE LESSONS 1 Cr.
Designed for nonmajors who wish to study organ for credit. Half-hour or 50-minute lessons. A minimum of six hours per week practice is required. Prerequisite: Audition required.
MUSL 1370-1378 ELECTIVE LESSONS 1 Cr.
Designed for nonmajors who wish to study these instruments for credit, or for majors who wish to develop proficiency on a second instrument. All lessons are half-hour, except for String, Wind which is 50 minutes. A minimum of six hours per week practice is required. Register for the number that corresponds with your area of interest:

MUSP 2310 PIANO: PERFORMANCE LEVEL LESSONS 2 Cr.
Required for music majors whose principal instrument is piano; other qualified students may be admitted. Study of repertoire from baroque through contemporary periods and technical exercises as determined by the instructor. 50-minute lessons. A minimum of 12 hours practice per week is required. Prerequisite: A successful entrance audition.
MUSP 2330 VOICE: PERFORMANCE LEVEL LESSONS 2 Cr.
Required for music majors whose principal performing medium is voice; other qualified students may be admitted. Study of vocal repertoire including oratorio, arie antiche, German Lieder, French art songs, operatic arias and contemporary British and American songs; vocalises as determined by instructor. 50-minute lessons. Normal minimum requirement: four songs of which two are memorized per semester. Prerequisite: A successful entrance audition.
MUSP 2370-2379 PERFORMANCE LEVEL LESSONS 2 Cr.
Required for music majors whose principal performing medium is a string, wind or percussion instrument; other qualified students may be admitted. Study of standard literature for the instrument and technical exercises as determined by the instructor. 50-minute lessons. A minimum of 12 hours per week practice is required.
