COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

SPAN 1110 ELEMENTARY SPANISH I 4 Cr.
Encourages your active involvement with Spanish from the first class, helping you to develop knowledge and practical ability at an elementary level in all five skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking and cultural awareness. Offered in fall and winter semester, and in an accelerated format during summer and in Weekend College. Prerequisite: Placement required of all students, unless you have never taken Spanish.

SPAN 1120 ELEMENTARY SPANISH II 4 Cr.
Continuation of Elementary Spanish I. You will further develop your receptive abilities: listening, reading, and cultural awareness, at the same time you increase your communication skills in Spanish: the productive abilities, speaking and writing. Offered in fall and winter semester, and in an accelerated format in summers and in Weekend College. Placement exam required of students who did not take Elementary Spanish I at the College of St. Catherine. Prerequisite: SPAN 1110, its equivalent, or placement exam.

SPAN 2110 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH I 4 cr.
Designed to increase listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Spanish with a focus on Hispanic culture. Intensive practice of grammatical structures. Offered annually. Also offered summers and in Weekend College. Prerequisite: SPAN 1120, its equivalent, or placement exam.

SPAN 2120 INTERMEDIATE SPANISH II 4 cr.
With a specific focus on cultural understanding, history, and social justice, you will apply grammar structures learned in the previous three semesters to discuss and analyze themes from Spanish-speaking countries and the United States. Emphasis is on verbal and written communication. Offered every semester. Prerequisite: SPAN 2110, its equivalent, or placement exam.

SPAN 2250 VISIONS OF THE HISPANIC WORLD: READING TO SPEAK & WRITE 4 CR.
Through this writing-intensive bridge course to advanced courses in the department, you will take a cross-cultural and cross-disciplinary approach to reading and analyzing texts in Spanish. Varying from semester to semester, literary texts and films may be chosen from a range of time periods, genres, and place of origin: Spain, Latin America and/or Spanish-speaking parts of the U.S. You will focus primarily on critical reading and writing, as you continue to polish skills in listening and speaking. Offered every semester. Prerequisite: SPAN 2120, its equivalent, or placement exam.

SPAN 3160 HISPANICS IN THE UNITED STATES 4 Cr.
You will gain knowledge about the layered history and issues involving Hispanics and Latinos in the United States. As you discuss a number of materials, from writings, to film and documentaries, to the arts, to experiential learning tasks, you will increase your awareness of and experience with cross-cultural, bilingual ways of life, thinking, and being. You will speak primarily in Spanish. Offered winter semester. Prerequisite: SPAN 2110 or permission of instructor.

SPAN 3250 ADVANCED SPANISH: INTRODUCTION TO CRITICAL CULTURAL ANALYSIS 4 CR.
You will learn how to read and write about a variety of literary and cultural texts, including film. At the same time you will incorporate into your work specialized analytical terminology and grammar structures not thoroughly covered in intermediate-level Spanish. This course will prepare you for success in advanced classes in the department. Offered in fall semester. Prerequisite: SPAN 2250.

SPAN 3550 SHORT STORIES IN SPANISH 4 Cr.
Through a multi-disciplinary approach that includes history, literature, art, politics, and film, you will explore the evolution of Hispanic culture, looking at changes and connections between Spain and Latin America. Offered every other year. Prerequisite: SPAN 2250 or equivalent.

SPAN 3700 CONTEMPORARY HISPANIC TEXTS 4 Cr.
Focusing on themes and prominent authors and contemporary works that vary from year to year, you will read and discuss contemporary works written in Spanish from Spain, Latin America and/or the U.S. Offered every other year. Prerequisite: SPAN 2250 or equivalent.

SPAN 4000 HISPANIC MASTERPIECES 4 Cr.
You will read and analyze literary masterworks written in Spanish. Content varies and may focus on connecting themes bridging writers from Spain, Latin America and/or the U.S. Prerequisite: SPAN 2250 or equivalent.

SPAN 4100 HISPANIC WOMEN WRITERS 4 Cr.
Through reading texts written by important Hispanic women writers, you will gain insight into rich, wide-ranging and diverse histories and cultures of written work by Spanish-speaking women writers across places and time, from Spain to the Twin Cities. Offered every other year. Prerequisite: SPAN 2250 or equivalent.

SPAN 4602 or 4604 INTERNSHIP 2 or 4 Cr.
As a minor or major, you may plan structured out-of-class learning experiences that combine either a work component or cultural/linguistic development in a Hispanic environment. To initiate an internship experience, you must meet with the internship coordinator in the Career Development Office, and a member of the Spanish faculty to discuss the on-campus requirements of your internship contract. Prerequisite: Approval by Spanish Department chair.

SPAN 4860 SENIOR SEMINAR 4 Cr.
This challenging capstone course will challenge Spanish majors to take a critical approach to cultural/literary analysis. You will prepare and give informal and formal presentations on a regular basis, and will conduct research in order to write a scholarly paper. Content and topic varies from year to year. Offered winter semester.

SPAN 4952 or 4954 INDEPENDENT STUDY 2 or 4 Cr.
You should contact the Spanish Department faculty to discuss the topic/theme of the independent study project you have in mind. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor and department chair.

SPAN 4994 TOPICS 4 Cr.
You will have the opportunity to learn about topics and/or prominent Hispanics that are not regularly offered in the department. Content varies from year to year but does not duplicate existing courses. Prerequisite: SPAN 2250 or consent of instructor.
