Music (MUS)

Program Option: B.A.

St. Kate's offers an array of courses through which students develop individual performance and musicianship skills, perform in vocal or instrumental ensembles, deepen their appreciation of and literacy in the heritage of western music and open themselves to a more global perspective through the study of world music.  A high percentage of course offerings is open to all students, regardless of major, and all music courses fulfill the University's Fine Arts requirement.

Those wishing to concentrate on the study of music will begin by pursuing the music studies minor.  This minor serves as a foundation, which may then be combined as a specialty area with a major in another discipline, such as business, theology or a health-related field, or expanded into one of two music studies majors currently being proposed. These are music in the church and music in culture.

Students with an interest in both music and theater may choose to pursue the music theater major, also presently being proposed, which will combine the music minor with courses in theater and participation in campus music theater productions.

Private music instruction is offered at St. Kate's in voice, piano, flute, harp, and strings.  These courses are listed with the "MUSL" designation.  Students should follow normal online registration for their choice of lesson AND contact the Music Office (x6690) to complete additional paperwork.  Those seeking lessons in other wind or brass instruments should also contact the Music Office for assistance in registering for lessons through the ACTC.  For piano and voice, students with little or no experience are expected to register for the Beginning Voice (MUS) or the Beginning Piano Class (MUS) for their first semester of study.

Participation in performance ensembles is generally dependent upon an audition with the group's director.  Ensemble courses are designated as  "MENS" courses.  Students seeking acceptance into an ensemble should hold the timeslot for the course open and add the course registration upon acceptance into the ensemble.  Contact the Music Office (651-690-6690) or the ensemble director for audition information.  Alternatively, a student may indicate her intention to participate in the ensemble by registering for the course prior to an audition, with the understanding that the registration might need to be adjusted.

All other music courses appear in the catalog with the prefix "MUS."
