Academic Standing and Progression Policy

HEALTHCARE CERTIFICATE AND ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS
To advance from one term to the next, students are required to show satisfactory academic performance to meet requirements of their program and to fulfill all financial obligations to the University. Policies for progression within programs are available from the program director and may be more stringent than this policy.

University probation results if your cumulative institutional GPA falls below 2.00. You are informed by the dean's office, in writing, of your status. You must meet with your academic advisor upon receiving notice of probation.  You will be placed on extended probation or suspended from the University if you do not meet the conditions of probation. You may apply for readmission after one semester's absence.

You may petition the academic dean for reconsideration of suspension.  Petitions must be submitted in writing to the Office of the Registrar.

READMISSION TO CERTIFICATE OR ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAM AFTER SUSPENSION
Conditions to be met prior to or at the time of re-enrollment may be established, and they will be presented to you as part of the re-enrollment offer. Offers of re-enrollment will include at least the following conditions:

  1. You will be on probationary admission status during the first semester.
  2. In order to remain at the University beyond the first semester, you must meet the re-enrollment conditions.
  3. As part of the re-enrollment decision, your previous educational record at St. Catherine University will be evaluated as that of a student transferring from another college.

BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM
Baccalaureate students' records are evaluated for academic standing after the grade due date for the term. A day student's record is reviewed every fall and winter semester, and a Weekend College student's record is reviewed when she has attempted at least eight credits since her previous review or since her first term of enrollment.

Transfer grades are not computed in your grade point average for academic standing determinations. You will remain in good standing if your institutional cumulative grade point average (GPA) remains at or above 2.00. You will be placed on first, continued or restrictive probation based on the conditions listed below. In severe cases, you may be suspended from the University for a designated period of time.

Initial Probation

You will be placed on First Probation if the following condition exists:

  • Cumulative GPA < 2.000

If you are placed on First Probation status you must complete a contract for academic improvement in conjunction with the Office of Academic Advising (day students) or Weekend College Office (WEC students) and your academic advisor. In addition, you may not register for more than 12 semester credits (four credits for WEC students) during the probationary term and must take all courses for a letter grade, unless the course is offered only on an S/U basis.

Continued Probation
You will be placed on Continued Probation if any of the following conditions exist:

  • Failure to achieve good standing after first term on probation.
  • Good standing was achieved after previous probationary period, but cumulative GPA again falls below 2.000.

If you are placed on Continued Probation you must meet with the Office of Academic Advising (day students) or Weekend College Office (WEC students) three times during the probationary term. You may be restricted from participating in co-curricular activities. In addition, you may not register for more than 12 semester credits (four credits for WEC students) during the probationary term and must take all courses for a letter grade, unless the course is offered only on an S/U basis.

Restrictive Probation
You will be placed on Restrictive Probation if any of the following conditions exist (you may be placed directly on Restrictive Probation without having been on probation previously):

  • Failure to achieve cumulative GPA of 2.000 or better after term on Continued Probation
  • Session GPA <1.000
  • Cumulative GPA <1.000
  • Three or more failing grades in courses worth at least two credits received in one term (two failing grades for WEC students)

The Baccalaureate Academic Review Committee may elect to suspend you rather than place you on Restrictive Probation. If you are placed on Restrictive Probation you must meet with the Office of Academic Advising (day students) or Weekend College Office (WEC students) three times during the probationary term. You are not allowed to hold any office or representative position, participate in varsity athletics or receive an Incomplete grade in any of the courses in which you are enrolled. You may also be prevented from undertaking a role in a major music or theatre production. In addition, you may not register for more than 12 semester credits (four credits for WEC students) during the probationary term and must take all courses for a letter grade, unless the course is offered only on an S/U basis.

Suspension
You will be suspended from the University for a period of one or two terms if any of the following conditions exist:

  • Failure to achieve cumulative GPA of 2.000 or better after term on Restrictive Probation (may not have any Incomplete grades)
  • Five or more failing grades in courses worth two or more credits in one academic year (three or more failing grades for WEC students)

The Baccalaureate Academic Review Committee will determine whether you will take one or two terms off from school. You may appeal the Committee's decision. Appeals must be made in writing to the Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Readmission after suspension
You must apply in writing to the dean of arts and sciences for readmission to the University. To be readmitted, you must show evidence that you will succeed in an academic program. The readmission decision made by the dean of arts and sciences is final. If readmitted, the director of Academic Advising (Weekend College for WEC students), your academic advisor and you will develop a new contract for academic improvement. You will be placed on Continued Probation status the term you return from suspension.
