The following information should help you understand whether you need to take language courses to fulfill the College of St. Catherine bachelor's degree requirements.

If you are continuing in a language, it should help you to determine the correct course for which you should register.

If you have not satisfied the requirements described below, you will be required to take foreign language coursework. Remember, all St. Catherine's Bachelors Degree prgorams are offered as a Bachelor of Arts, only selected programs offer a Bachelor of Science.
To determine if you major is offered as a B.S. please check the list of majors.

Language Requirement for a Bachelor of Arts Degree:

Students must demonstrate equivalency through the third semester level either by completion of the first semester intermediate course (2110) at the College of St. Catherine or by achieving a passing grade on an approved equivalency test.

The language requirement is also satisfied by three years of acceptable high school course work in the same language, with a minimum grade of C-.

Language Requirement for a Bachelor of Science Degree:
(B.S. is offered in all Business Administration, Economics, Communication Studies, and FCNS degress, also most Education degrees and EXSS, Math, Nursing, Pre-OT, Respiratory Care, Social Work)

Students must demonstrate equivalency through the second semester level either by completion of the second semester elementary course (1120) at the College of St. Catherine or by achieving a passing grade on an approved equivalency test.

The language requirement is also satisfied by two years of high school course work in the same language, with a minimum grade of C-.

What level should I register for?
The on-line placement assessment is available for French and Spanish.
If you are interested in continuing study in another language, please contact the department offering the language using the links above or the Office of Academic Advising at 651-690-6803.

Information on the Placement Assessments:
The Language Placement Assessment is designed to help identify the most appropriate language level for those who plan to register for a Spanish or French language course at St. Kate’s. The assessment measures your language skill background, and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. The assessment is administered on-line and results are available within ten minutes of completion. Results are also immediately forwarded to language faculty in the appropriate department. If you plan to register for French or Spanish for Fall 2008, it is strongly recommended that you take the placement assessment prior to submitting your registration materials.

FREN111: Elementary French I (score 0-199)
FREN112: Elementary French II (score 200-299)
FREN211: Intermediate French (score 300-399)

*Spanish: According to your assessment score, you may register for:
SPAN111: Elementary Spanish I (score 0 – 296)
SPAN112: Elementary Spanish II (score 297-355)
SPAN211: Intermediate Spanish I (score 356-439)
SPAN220: Intermediate Spanish II (score 440 or above)
