EXCERPTS FROM 2007 90th Anniversary Presentation by Kathleen Donahue Werthmann '65 for her mother, St. Catherine Alumnae Award-Winner Eileen Welch Donahue '26
Mom was President of the Alumnae Association for four years: 1933,34,35,36. It was, of course, during the Depression, and times were very hard, and money for the college was quite difficult to raise.
It was 1936 and Mother had an appointment to see Mother Antonia, College President, at the Derham Hall parlor. Mom was seeking approval from Mother Antonia to institute an all-alumnae dinner to raise funds for tuition scholarship money. Sound familiar?
When she arrived, the receptionist told her that Mother Antonia was quite weak that day (she passed away the next year in 1937). Mom said that she’d never want to disturb her when she was ill, and she would come back another time, but Mother Antonia sent word that she definitely wanted to see Mom.
When she entered the Parlor, she approached Mother Antonia who was laying down on a chaise lounge . . . Mother Antonia told Eileen that no matter what, she always had time for her and the Alumnae Association, and she …expressed great enthusiasm and the go-ahead for the fundraising project.
Then Mother Antonia told Mom that in case she did not have another opportunity to tell her, how important the work and the tremendous support of the Alumnae Association was to the college.
Mother Antonia said “It is the one strong group that will always be behind the College and make sure it succeeds and flourishes in the decades ahead, in times that are good and in times like these that are bad. Please do whatever you can in your lifetime to make sure the Alumnae Association continues on to successfully support this great Women’s Catholic College….Please Eileen, Please.” Mom promised her that she would do everything she possibly could do.
And, Mom did that and tonight she passes that torch on to you, so that upon hearing Mother Antonio’s words, you will continue on in all the great work that you all do for St. Catherine’s future progress and great success. |
