U.S. - CHINA ECONOMIC RELATIONS: EVOLVING RIVALRY

What questions or opinions did you develop about China during the recent Olympic Games? Should the U.S. be concerned as China is poised to become the world’s third largest economy? Join other alumnae and friends for a presentation by and discussion led by Thomas Hanson, program secretary for the St. Paul-Minneapolis Committee on Foreign Relations. Hanson, who participated in the opening of U.S. embassies in Mongolia and Estonia, holds a number of master’s degrees including one from the Geneva Institute of Advanced International Studies. INTRODUCTION TO “THE SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE”

Saturday, September 27, 10 a.m. to noon Visual Arts Building, Room 101 Fe: $15
The College of St. Catherine’s Catherine G. Murphy Gallery will host an exhibition of prints from "The Saint John’s Bible," the first handwritten illuminated bible produced since the 16th century, Sept. 13–Oct. 28. The exhibition of 31 framed giclee prints is the largest to date and includes never before seen illustrations from the most recently completed volume, Wisdom Books. This presentation will give an introduction to the processes and images in The Saint John’s Bible. Susan Sink will speak on the materials used and artists represented in this unique project. She will also address the theological, artistic, and thematic elements behind some of the illuminations on display. Bring questions! Participants will have time before and after the presentation to view the illustrations. Susan Sink is the author of two volumes of The Art of The Saint John’s Bible and a book of poems, The Way of All the Earth. RELIEF- PRINTING AND COLLAGE WORKSHOP
Artist Mary Esch offers this drawing class on six Saturdays.

What Christmas images have you always loved? How can you combine a few of them so they express the mystery of Christmas in your own way? Relief-printing is a great way to combine, stylize, and personalize those old-favorites. Join artist Mary Esch in this six-week class that will explore the process of creative brainstorming, relief-painting, and collage techniques. The techniques will require no printing press so all that is learned can be done at home. Students will create an exploration-collage and an edition of 24, 4x5 Christmas cards. The Lifelong Learning Committee offered a scenic and educational trip to Door County, Wisconsin, to all our alumnae and friends in August 2008. This was part of our Adventurous Scholar Program! We gathered at the lovely Björklunden lodge, at the northern campus of Lawrence University, on the Lake Michigan Shore just south of Baileys Harbor.

GREAT DECISIONS: TALKING TO OUR ENEMIES
Frank Wright, former Star Tribune journalist who served as bureau chief and managing editor, Washington correspondent and foreign correspondent reporting from more than 60 countries, will questions such as: How the United States deals with international challenges often depends on how we are engaged with our allies, as well as our enemies. How should we deal with countries like Cuba, North Korea and Iran? What approach should we take with groups like Hamas and Hezbollah? This discussion was the first presentation of our four-part Great Decisions program discussions. For highlights of this program, click here.

MEMOIR WRITING
Ever want to write down the plot, themes, and beloved characters in your life? Attendees spent the first session considering the many options in memoir writing, tips in wading into the project, and how to get started with some freewriting exercises. In the second session, we discussed options in structuring a memoir and polishing individual pieces. Then we read some exerpts to get input. Click here for some memoir writing tips.
 HO, HO, HOLISTIC HEALTH
CSC Director the Masters of Arts Program in Holistic Health Studies at the Minneaplis campus shared how laughter helps in healing and mainting good health. “That was wonderful”, “so fun”, “really good” remarked members of the smiling audience at the end of this Evening Scholar event.
