Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by author Betty Edwards is an internationally loved book on drawing. Join artist Mary Esch for eight Saturdays as she coaches you through 10 chapters of this mind expanding series of exercises that will wake up your right brain (the creative side). Supplies for this class are minimal but there will be much reading and practice at home and in class. This class is for the person who has always wanted to draw but has struggled to move over to their right brain. Its also for the person who wants to wake up their right brain and willing to draw pictures in order to do so. The left brain is well developed for many professionals allowing them to efficiently complete hundreds of tasks a day. But the professional who thinks in new and unusual configurations has access to their right brain. In this class, drawing from observation is the vehicle to access the right brain. There will some very interesting exercises that will open you up. Are you up for an eight week brain tease to unlock your creative side? This class is 4 hours longer than when offered this winter. While you must select either the Thursday or Saturday classes, substitution can be made on a week by week limited basis.

WOMEN DETECTIVES IN LITERATURE
"Sixty Years of Fictional Women Detectives: Nancy Drew to "The #1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Dr. Mary Bendel-Simso SP '86 co-authored

"DIVINE WORDS INSPIRED ART: PRINTS FROM THE SAINT JOHN'S BIBLE"
was exhibited at the Catherine G. Murphy Gallery in September and October 2008. Lifelong Learning had Saturday morning program on this incredible mix of faith and art.
“Creation, Covenant, Shekinah, Kingdom,” Wisdom of Solomon 10–11 -- Donald Jackson, 2004; natural hand-ground ink on calfskin vellum, copyright 2004, The Saint John’s Bible and the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library at Saint John's University, Collegeville, Minn.
For more than a millennium, Bibles were not only the word of God but works of art, thanks to the tradition of illuminated manuscripts. The hand-lettered manuscripts, with exquisitely decorated initials, borders and miniature illustrations, gradually faded as an art form with the advent of the printing press; but in 1998, Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., revived this educational, artistic and spiritual tradition with its ambitious and celebrated project — The Saint John’s Bible: An Illuminated Bible for the Modern Age.
Donald Jackson, an internationally renowned calligrapher and scribe to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s Crown Office at the House of Lords, was chosen to carry out the commission, assisted by a team of calligraphers and illuminators. They have used the tools and materials employed by scribes more than a thousand years ago — quill pens on vellum, natural handmade inks, hand-ground pigments, and gold and silver leaf, coupled with the advantages of modern computer technology for layout.
Scheduled to be completed in 2010, the monumental work will contain more than 1,100 pages with 160 illuminations in seven volumes, each measuring two feet by three feet. The words work hand in hand with the art, seeking to inspire a new generation with dynamic interpretations of scripture from a contemporary perspective that embraces our diverse world. For more ...
