Wildcat athletics hands out year-end awards
May 14, 2007 – The College of St. Catherine athletic department handed out its year-end awards at a banquet on Monday afternoon. In addition to awards voted on by the coaches all student-athletes who were named to the MIAC’s All-Sportsmanship and All-Conference teams were also recognized.

Seniors Halie Vosler (Sr., Spearfish, S.D.) and Angie Johnson (Sr., Wadena, Minn.) were given the Sheila Brown Wildcat Award. The Sheila Brown Wildcat Award recognizes senior athletes who have made a long-term contribution to the athletic program. It is awarded to athletes who have consistently exhibited the traits Sheila Brown most admired: athleticism, scholarship, dedication, sportsmanship, and leadership.

Halie Vosler has been an outstanding leader for the Wildcat Soccer Team both on and off the field for the last four years. She was a four-year starter and has been a captain for the last three years. She was named All-MIAC Honorable Mention after her senior season and has played an important role with the team all four years.

Halie has been very involved in the Wildcat Student Athlete Advisory Council, serving as vice president her junior year, and then as president her senior year. Her leadership led to a successful Toys for Teens drive and Soles for Souls drive, and she contributed to the success of the MIAC Student Athlete Advisory Council Habitat for Humanity project.

She was inducted into Phi Betta Kappa following her junior year. This honor is bestowed upon only the top 3% of liberal arts majors in each class. Halie successfully completed the honors program at St. Kate’s and will be graduating with a Major in Biology. Her final semester grades are not in, but she currently has a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Angie Johnson competed for four years on both the Hockey and Softball teams at St. Kate’s and she made a dramatic impact on both teams. This is the second time this year that Angie has won an award named after Sheila Brown. She also earned the MIAC Women’s Hockey Sheila Brown Award. This award is given to one outstanding senior hockey player in the MIAC who has made a long-term contribution to their team.

In hockey, Angie earned all-conference honors her junior season and all conference honorable mention honors her senior season. For the last three years she has led the Wildcats in points and she has served as captain the last two years. The American Women’s Hockey Coaches Association has twice named Angie a National Scholar Athlete.

Angie’s contributions to the softball team are just as numerous. She currently holds St. Kate’s records for career home runs and career runs scored. She is 2nd all-time for career RBIs. The softball coaches association named Angie a scholar-athlete all four years she was with the team.

Between hockey and softball, Angie has competed for St. Kate’s in an astounding 237 games. She is currently finishing her first year in the doctorate of physical therapy program. She has done all of this while maintaining a 3.75 GPA.

First year volleyball player Maria Hoffman (Montgomery, Minn.) was named Rookie of the Year. The Rookie of the Year is awarded to a first year student or upperclassman for whom this was her first year of collegiate competition. The criteria for the award include academic success, athletic achievement, and team leadership.

Maria led St. Kate’s in kills, kills per game, attack percentage, blocks, and blocks per game. She was also second on the team in digs. She is a middle blocker who also is a strong back row player, one of the few in the MIAC who excel at both.

Maria was named to the All-Tournament Team at the St. Kate’s Invitational and again at the Octoberfest Tournament at Viterbo College. She was voted by her teammates as team MVP.

Senior Jess Lewandowski (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) was named the McCahill Athlete of the Year. The McCahill Athlete of the Year is awarded to the student-athlete that exemplifies the best qualities of athletes participating in Division III collegiate sports. The criterion for the award is focused mainly on athletic achievement, but also includes team leadership, academic achievement, and community involvement.

Jessica has built an impressive athletic resume during her time at St. Kate’s. Both at the plate and on the mound, she has been a dominant force throughout her career. Her senior season was no different. Jess led the Wildcat Softball team to a sixth place conference finish, the second best in team history.

Lewandoski’s name is amongst the MIAC leaders in nearly every category. She ranks 6th in the MIAC for ERA, 4th in opponents batting average, 7th in wins, 11th in innings pitched, and 8th in total number of batters struck out. And that is just on the pitching side. As a batter, Jess finished the regular season ranked 8th in on base percentage, 5th in slugging percentage, 9th in batting average, and 2nd in home runs hit.

Her name is also seen many times in the St. Kate’s record books. As a pitcher, she is 2nd all time for career strike outs, and she is also 2nd for career ERA. As a hitter, she is 3rd all time for career batting average and she set the record for homeruns in a single season. She also finished this season ranked 29th in the nation for homeruns per game.

Jess is a two-time All-MIAC selection, and she also earned honorable mention once. She is a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar Athlete. Jessica is a nursing major with a 3.33 GPA.
