Wildcat softball drops pair at Sun West tourney
March 21, 2007 – The College of St. Catherine softball team dropped both of their games on Tuesday afternoon in Orange, California at the Sun West Tournament. The Wildcats have lost their last six games at the tournament.
In the first game of the day, the Wildcats jumped out to a five run lead with three runs in the second and two more in the third on a home run by Jess Lewandowski (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.). Amherst College battled their way back to within one on four third inning runs.
In the sixth, Amherst took the lead on two runs. The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the seventh on an unearned run, then held Amherst in the bottom of the inning to send the game in to extra innings.
The Wildcats scored one run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single by Kelly Walentiney (Sr., Richfield, Minn.). The Wildcats were unable to hold the lead in the bottom of the eighth, giving up two runs for the final score of 8-7.
In the second game of the day the Wildcats faced Tufts University. In a replay of the day’s first game, the Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0 lead but were unable to hold the lead, surrendering five runs in the fourth inning on their way to a 6-3 loss.
The Wildcats have an off day today and will finish the tournament with one game tomorrow and two more on Friday.
