School District Applications and Research

District Research
One of the first tasks you must complete when starting your Education job search is to research school districts to investigate which schools you would like to apply to. To do this, go many school district websites to learn more about each district and see if what they have to offer matches what you are looking for in a school you would like to teach in. Look at the MN Education Fair Website for web links to specific school districts. The SchoolHouse magazine can also assist you with this research process, and it is available in the Career Development Office.

Researching school districts is very important not only before you apply for teaching jobs, but also as you begin to interview for teaching positions. When you have an interview, you always need to make sure that you have great knowledge about that particular school district. The more you have been researching, the easier the interview process will be.

District Applications
Once you know which districts you would like to apply to, begin completing their online applications. Do this even if they do not have a teaching position available at that time because these applications take a great amount of time, and you will want them completed by the time a position does become available. Be sure to include everything that the district application requires, including a resume and general cover letter.

Once you have completed district applications, keep checking their website for new available teaching positions. If a new position becomes available that you would like to apply for, send a new resume and cover letter to the district or hiring principal stating specifically what position you are applying for. Make sure to mention that you have already applied to their district previously.

It is important to apply to all the districts you would be interested in working in because the job market is very competitive. You do not want to limit your search or hiring potential in any way.
