Quick Intro to Blackboard

Blackboard is a web-based course management system that allow you to easily provide a course web site for your students that contains the following features:

    • Downloadable course materials
    • Discussion boards for asynchronous online chats
    • A “Virtual Classroom” for real-time online chats
    • Online assessments and surveys
    • Online grade book
    • Sending of group emails to the entire class

Why is Blackboard valuable to me and my students?
Some great reasons to use blackboard include:
    • You can increase student participation in your course during the times you’re not meeting by offering interactive materials, course notes, and an online discussion, which can be especially valuable for the Weekend College format.
    • You can save paper and copying costs by offering handouts online instead of printing them out.
    • You can compile a list of internet links that can help students conduct research or find out more about a topic.
    • Students can share drafts of papers online and comment on them, even when they can’t meet face-to-face
...and, of course, many other reasons—talk with us in Instructional Technology about your ideas for your course and how Blackboard can help make them a reality!

How do I get started?
Contact Cyndy Krey at or Janet Winsand at to get a Blackboard account set up for yourself.

Once you have an account, you can create your courses through the registrar’s kiosk. Cyndy and Janet can help you to create your course site, make sure all of your students have access, and also answer your technical and "best practices" questions about using the system, as well as any other Instructional Technology questions you may have.
