The Master of Arts in Education (MAED) offers options in entry-level, advanced and specialized studies for women and men interested in the field of education. The Initial Licensure specialization is designed for those with a bachelor's degree who want to become Minnesota-licensed elementary, secondary or K-12 teachers. New licensure area certificates for licensed teachers also are available. The Montessori specialization prepares students to teach in Montessori classrooms with an early childhood or elementary credential from the American Montessori Society (AMS). The Montessori specialization is open to entry-level and licensed teachers; certificate options are available. The Curriculum and Instruction option is an advanced program for licensed teachers, providing a framework that supports the professional growth of the teacher practitioner.
Unique Features
Meets current needs in education by offering options that:
- provide focus for elementary and middle school teachers in the areas of Communication Arts/ Literature, French, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Spanish
- educate licensed teachers to use current best practices in curriculum, instruction and assessment
- enable individuals making career changes to become licensed elementary and/or kindergarten teachers in traditional or Montessori classrooms
- employ a practitioner's approach to improving teaching through action research
- follow an evening/weekend or distance format with small classes in a cohort model, designed for those who work during the week
- provide a highly qualified faculty with diverse educational backgrounds and teaching experience
Accreditation
The College of St. Catherine is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. All teacher licensure programs are approved by the Minnesota Board of Teaching.
