Most students complete the MAT program in two years or more. Courses are offered throughout the year, including summers. Your course work will emphasize Western Christianity, including the major texts of the Roman Catholic, Jewish, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant traditions. Your studies will recognize the contributions of women and men to religion through careful examination of their writings. You also will study works of contemporary female and male theologians and learn to critically assess their contributions to the Christian tradition as it continues to evolve. Through these courses, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of catholic theological tradition by being exposed to its major representative texts and thinkers. The term catholic, as used to describe the Christian tradition at the center of this program, means its original, ecumenical sense.
The graduate program includes a concentration in spirituality. This concentration offers you an in-depth examination of the theory and practice of Christian spirituality. You will have the opportunity to deepen your understanding of spirituality and blend knowledge with experience, which will give you a solid academic foundation for various ministries.
The MAT program consists of required courses in the areas of biblical, historical and systematic theology, elective courses, a thesis or practicum, and successful completion of comprehensive exams. Courses in spiritual theology, pastoral theology and advanced scripture may be recommended depending on your area(s) of interest.
