MLIS With School Library Media Certification
The following program of nine specific courses and three electives, plus field experience and education courses, meets the requirements for the MLIS degree with MN School Library Media Specialist certification:

  • LIS 7010 Introduction to Library and Information Science
  • LIS 7030 Organization of Knowledge
  • LIS 7040 Reference and Online Services
  • LIS 7160 Communication for Leadership
  • LIS 7210 Library Materials for Children
  • LIS 7220 Library Materials for Young Adults
  • LIS 7240 Media Services and Production
  • LIS 7250 Curriculum and School Libraries
  • LIS 7283/7286 Clinical Experience/Student Teaching
  • LIS 7730 School Libraries
    Electives: 9 credits
    Total: 39-42 credits

Clinical Practice in School Libraries
Clinical experience enables School Library Media students to apply the knowledge gained from course work in a variety of school library settings. The Coordinator of Clinical Practice works closely with each student to secure a placement in a school library media setting that will afford a rewarding learning experience.


Teaching Licensure
Students who do not have a current Minnesota teaching license also must complete the following courses and an electronic portfolio:
  • EDUC 5070 Teachers as Leaders in a Changing Society
  • EDUC 5490 School Health and Chemical Health
  • EDUC 5800 General Methods: Elementary
  • EDUC 7550 Literacy in the Content Areas
  • PSYC 1001 General Psychology
  • PSYC 2020 Lifespan Developmental Psychology

These courses must be completed prior to enrolling in any LIS courses other than 7010, 7030 or 7040.
