Clearing Tests for Students
We highly recommend that students submit each answer while taking a Blackboard test or quiz. This keeps the testing computer interacting with Blackboard and prevents the system from timing out.
Periodically students begin a test and the system stops functioning before the test is submitted. You will find a padlock symbol in the gradebook when this happens. The symbol also indicates a test is in progress. If you have questions that are short answer or essay that require instructor grading, you will also see this symbol. In that case, do not clear the attempt.
The directions below are for situations when the answers have not been recorded and the student is taking the test a second time.
In the gradebook under the student's name, click on the padlock in the test item column.

A Modify Grade page appears with the student's name and information about that item. On the far right is a button to view the exam. Click on it.

The next page displays the questions, the answer the student chose and the correct answer. Usually when there is a problem the Given Answer: will indicate [None Given] as in the example below. There is also a button to Clear Attempt. Click on that.

A dialog box asks you to confirm the removal of this attempt. Click on OK. The student may now retake the test.
