Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
Definition
An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company that offers users access to the Internet. Most ISPs offer this access through a specific software program which they provide to the user, either free of charge or for a small fee. You use this software to dial in (via modem) to connect your computer to the ISPs system.
Locating an ISP

Some of the internet providers that operate in the Twin Cities Area include:
Things to consider when choosing an ISP
When comparing ISPs, judge them according to these features
- Access via a local phone number. If no local number is available, compare prices for public data network, 800 service, and direct dial long distance service. Calling long distance out of state or across the country may be less expensive than calling the next town 50 miles away.
- A pricing plan that matches your usage needs and your budget. Be sure to read the fine print.
- Toll-free technical support at the hours you want.
- Offers connect speeds compatable with your modem (for example, 14.4, 28.8, or 56K).
