Voter Education and Mobilization
Fall, 2002
During this election season there were a number of issues forums presented by the Center for Women Economic Justice, and Public Policy. The health care policy forum was presented by Susan Stout, Chief Lobbyist for the Minnesota Nurses' Association. This forum focuses on what issues of healthcare the candidates were focusing on and how would voters be able to influence those candidates' decisions. A very relevant forum for the time was, "Are You Responsible for Enron?" presented by Chuck Denny, retired CEO of ADC communications and long-time supporter of the College. This forum touched upon the changes needed to restore public confidence in our capital markets and the leadership of the business community. The third forum was on international agricultural policies, which was presented by Kristin Dawkings, Spokesperson for the International Agriculture and Trade Policies Commission. The final forum was presented by two members of the core planning group of the Center for Women, Economic Justice, and Public Policy; Diane Cushman, Director of the Legislative Commission on the Economic Status of Women; and Mary Jo McGuire, former State Representative and St. Kate's Political Science faculty. These women presented, " Women as Candidates and Policy Makers." They discussed women's' political history, challenges of women policy makers and importance for women of diverse backgrounds to run for political office.
