    The purpose of the discussion was making connections between courses taught in Fall 2007 and the Core Convocation on October 11, 2007 where the Pulitzer Prize Wining author, Marilynne Robinson, will be the keynote speaker.

      Health Care Disparities in Haiti

      Catherine Maternowska, a medical anthropologist who has worked in Haiti for 20 years, was on campus to discuss her new book Reproducing Inequities. She discussed reproductive health, foreign aid, and Haitian women.

      This student-led Learn-In will examine the ideas presented by Mary Brainerd and community leaders at the Faith, Values, Women and Politics lecture on October 24. Join CSC students, faculty and staff in a discussion of disparities in the Twin Cities and the College. Refreshments will be served.

        Health Care Access Disparities

        Presentation by Anita Ho, PhD, Philosophy
        Dr. Ho presented an overview of the American health care system, including the insurance system, who the uninsured are, and how people of different population groups are affected. She described how the Canadian system is funded and explored why countries with such similar linguistic and political culture differ so much in their health care systems. Finally, she looked at the new Massachusetts healthplan, and what Minnesota can learn from it.

        Voter Educations Forums and Debate

        The Center presented four Voter Education forums and one Candidate Debate. The forums brought professionals on campus to discuss Livable Wage, Immigration, Health Care Policies, and Funding of Higher Education. The debate was between the candidates for MN Senate and House in St. Kate's district. Overall, 180 students and community members became more informed through these events leading up to Election Day.
        St. Kate's Votes, a student group that works through the Center, spent several months registering student voters and drove over 100 students to the polls on Nov. 7.

        Second Annual Faith, Values, Women and Politics Series:
        How Do We Act for the Common Good?
        With Mary Brainerd

        Over 600 people packed into The O'Shaughnessy to hear Mary Brainerd, CEO of HealthPartners, speak about "Shaping our Future: Values, Justice and Disparity." As co-founder of the Itasca Project, she was instrumental in creating the "Mind the Gap" report on social and economic disparities in the Twin Cities. She was joined by three community leaders who responded to her speech: Mr. Owais Bayunus of the Islamic Center of MN, Rev. Janet Johnson of Wayman AME Church, and Ms. Irene Rodriguez of Resource Center of the Americas.

      Latino Fatherhood Conference
      Co-sponsored with CENTRO (www.centromn.org)
      Jeanne d'Arc Auditorium
      This conference featured the music and storytelling of Sacred Circles to explore the issues of domestic violence in the Latino community from a Latino perspective, with an emphasis on spirituality and the arts. Over 150 local parents and teens attended the event.
