It Takes A Village: Forum on Children in Poverty
Spring, 2001
The College of St. Catherine presented a unique interdisciplinary forum on children in poverty. "It Takes a Village" brought together professionals, students and activists to enhance knowledge, energize commitment and share resources to better respond to the needs of children in poverty. Expert speakers and presenters shared their perspectives and practices and explained how to apply them in various professional settings including nursing, teaching, social work, community activism and others. Distinguished keynote speaker, Dr. Ruby Payne, offered participants a framework for understanding children in poverty as well as effective working strategies. Distinguished Guests Senator Paul Wellstone and Mary Ann Graham, Asst Professor of Social Work - College of St.Catherine/University of St. Thomas offered their perspectives on the needs of children in poverty and what we as a community should do to address these problems. This event was sponsored by the Center for Women, Economic Justice and Public Policy, the Sister Ann Harvey Endowment at the College of St. Catherine and the education, nursing, sociology, political science departments at the College of St. Catherine and the School of Social Work at the College of St. Catherine and the University of St. Thomas.

2000-2001 CSC Student Body President Kate Brantingham with the late Senator Paul Wellstone at the It Takes A Village: Forum on Children in Poverty. Kate served as Senator Wellstone's intern where she was able to experience social justice and public policy through the perspective of a national government office.

Voter Education and Mobilization
October-November, 2000
Events which were part of the voter education program:
- Issues Forum - Wednesday, October 4, 2000, Global Dimensions of Public Policies
- Issues Forum - Wednesday, October 11, 2000, Domestic Dimensions of Public Policies
- Fourth District Candidate Forum - October 19
- Students in the Political Science Club ran a shuttle service to the polls, so that all students would be encouraged to vote.

.Libraries and Immigrant Communities
This project involved a team of students and faculty mentors who assisted the St. Paul Public Library to establish programs and services for immigrant and refugee communities. This project was based on the "Family Place" model of service for parents and young children and served immigrant communities at the Lexington Avenue Branch of the St. Paul Public Library. Students from the Library Science, Information Management and Education Departments worked with professional library staff to establish and implement a series of activities to enhance the "Family Place."
