The fifth annual Science @ St. Kate's Day was held mid-day Tuesday and there was plenty of interesting conversations and pizza to go around.

Science @ St. Kate’s Day featured students and faculty from nine departments from art to family, consumer and nutritional sciences displaying and discussing their research projects.

Ranging across the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, 67 research projects were displayed.

Eight of the projects were underwritten by 3M large- and small–scale student–faculty collaborative research grants.

Throughout the second and third floor atriums of Coeur de Catherine, you could listen to students explaining their projects and findings.

They ranged from a study measuring empathetic behavior to open ocean phytoplanktons’ ability to form large blooms to how cinnamon might have an effect on blood glucose levels in those with type 2 diabetes.

The Center for Women, Science and Technology (CWST) presented the event to educate the campus community about the many ways STEM fields impact our everyday lives.

Mathematical Sciences faculty member Yvonne Ng is center coordinator and Physics and Sonography departments faculty member Erick Agrimson coordinated Science @ St. Kate’s Day.

The CWST also engages in curriculum development, new research and new teaching strategies to advance the education of all women in science and technology fields.
