Basketball player is first Wildcat named to regional team

In a historic first for the St. Kate's basketball team, sophomore Laura Kalbfell has been named to the 2009 Women's Basketball All-West Region Team.

Kalbfell, who led the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in scoring, was the only representative from the MIAC to be named to the West Region first team of five players. is an online publication that covers Division III basketball nationwide.

"She is one of the hardest working players I have ever coached," said Gary Rufsvold, St. Kate's basketball coach. "Laura also has the skills to play multiple positions–she can play inside or outside."

A physical therapy major, Kalbfell is a native of Lakeville where she was an all-conference award winner and a team most valuable player twice as well as a 1000 point scorer at Lakeville South High School. She transferred this year from Southwest Minnesota State University.

Players were nominated for these awards by the sports information directors (SIDs). This year 662 players were nominated nationwide, a new high. The ballot was then made available to SIDs who voted for 10 players in their region.
