As part of its centennial celebration Nov. 5, the University of Minnesota School of Nursing recognized 100 distinguished alumni for advancing healthcare through noteworthy achievement in the field of nursing.

Among that distinguished group were Alice Swan, currently interim dean of the Henrietta Schmoll School of Health, and Mary Broderick, former faculty member, vice president and academic dean -- and once the acting president of St. Catherine University. Both also are members of the St. Catherine University Centennial 100, a distinguished list created for St. Catherine's centennial celebration in 2005.

Alice Swan
Alice Swan, DNSc, RN, was recognized for her leadership and for creating unique educational opportunities for students, nurse educators and clinical education providers.

“To be nominated and accepted to be part of this group was such an honor,” says Swan. “I am grateful to faculty and staff at St. Kate’s who have mentored me to be a leader.”

She was among the administrators and faculty who guided the University in creating the Henrietta Schmoll School of Health, launched in 2007. She ensures that nursing programs meet curricular and accreditation standards.

Swan also keeps a pulse on current issues in nursing and healthcare to keep St. Catherine University in the forefront of nursing issues in Minnesota and the region. At the behest of Minnesota Congresswoman Betty McCollum ’87, Swan has testified at hearings at the Minnesota State Capitol on federal healthcare reform.

In addition, Swan has served as president of the Minnesota Nursing Association and Minnesota Association of Colleges of Nursing and was recognized with a Leadership Award from Sigma Theta Tau International, the Honor Society of Nursing, in 1990.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1969 and a Master of Science in Nursing in 1973 from the University of Minnesota. She earned her Doctorate in Nursing Science from Rush University, Chicago, in 1997.

Mary Broderick
Mary E. Broderick, Ph.D., RN, was recognized for her work in building and transforming education. She received her undergraduate degree and doctorate from the U of M.

Broderick served St. Kate’s 33 years as a nursing faculty member and dean and vice president for the Minneapolis campus and as the interim president of the institution in 1997-1998.

In 1999 she joined Catholic Eldercare, a senior housing and care organization. She extended the reach and quality of senior healthcare, including the acquisition and development of property to offer quality condominium rentals to seniors. She retired in 2008.
