The National Center for STEM Elementary Education's teacher-training at Richfield's STEM magnet school was visited Thursday, Aug. 19 by Star Tribune reporter Kelly Smith who wrote "STEM-ing school enrollment losses" for the cover of the newspaper's Metro section Aug. 24.

St. Kate's Associate Dean of Education Lori Maxfield and Assistant Professor of Computer Science Yvonne Ng gave teachers at the school a week-long session on engineering concepts. Training and support for Richfield teachers will continue throughout the year as they earn graduate certificates in STEM education.

Center focuses on STEM education programs
The National Center for STEM Elementary Education was established to improve elementary teacher effectiveness, advance student performance and strengthen society’s literacy in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The Center is distinctive because it addresses one of the underlying reasons for negative interest in science—support for elementary teachers to instruct STEM subjects with competence and confidence.

Statistics shows that more than 80 percent of elementary school teachers are women. Home to the nation’s largest college for women, St. Kate’s is uniquely positioned to help women build their confidence and competence in STEM subjects.

The National Center has four key areas of emphasis:
Curriculum and materials,
Consulting and outreach for schools, school districts and community-based educators,
Research to evaluate STEM programs and
Preparing elementary educators to more effectively teach STEM.

The center’s executive director is Anthony Murphy, Ph.D., formerly associate dean of education at St. Kate’s.

STEM at the Minnesota State Fair!
The first ever “STEM at the Minnesota State Fair Day” Aug. 26 will give visitors the opportunity to experience the National Center for STEM Elementary Education at St. Catherine University.

St. Kate's joins 17 other statewide organizations to demonstrate the power and excitement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Exhibits will be open 8 a.m.–5 p.m. in Carousel Park near the grandstand.
