American Sign Language (ASL)
The mission of this department is to provide a state of the art education in American Sign Language and ASL-English interpretation. By developing linguistic, social and cultural competence in ASL, graduates are able to interact successfully and comfortably in the Deaf community.
Students choosing to major in ASL will study the language and culture of American Deaf people. With an ASL major, many students go on to work in the fields of linguistics, social work, education or theater. Many students choose to double major in those fields, or pursue master's degrees in ASL or related fields. Students may also minor in ASL.
All majors must develop and maintain proficiency in ASL. To this end, all ASL courses are taught in American Sign Language, and students are encouraged to find opportunities to use ASL in the community and on campus. ASL majors are also encouraged to minor in Language Studies, or participate in a study abroad program, to further their knowledge of language issues.
Information about additional interpreting courses required for the Interpreting major can be found at the Interpreting home page.
Student Handbook
This handbook outlines the expectations of the ASL/Interpreting Department and provides important information for students in the program.
