Sharrone N. Hayes, M.D., FACC
Director, Mayo Clinic Women’s Heart Clinic
Associate Professor of Medicine, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine

Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes directs and practices in the Mayo Clinic Women’s Heart Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She has been active at the national, local, and institutional level in promotion of cardiovascular health issues in women. She developed the Women’s Heart Clinic at Mayo to meet the unique needs of women at risk for or with cardiovascular disease in order to improve patient satisfaction, clinical outcomes, and research efforts. She is chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, and the Women’s Health Advisory Group of the American Society of Echocardiography and co-chaired the Jacob’s Institute of Women’s Health conference, “Women and Heart Disease: Putting Prevention into Primary Care”. She participated in the NHLBI’s "Women's Heart Health Education Strategy Workshop" in 2001 which ultimately led to the development of the “Heart Truth” campaign as well as several other NHLBI-sponsored workshops. She has represented the American College of Cardiology on several national and international committees, and in the development of AHA’s Evidence-based Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women. In February 2004 she was honored to be invited by First Lady Laura Bush to speak at the White House for the kick-off of Heart Month.

Doctor Hayes completed her undergraduate medical education at Northwestern University in Chicago and fellowships in Internal Medicine, cardiovascular research, and cardiovascular diseases at Mayo Clinic Rochester. She is currently Associate Professor of Medicine and Cardiology at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and Fellow of the American Society of Echocardiography. She maintains an active medical practice and is a nationally recognized educator and speaker on women’s cardiovascular issues, preventive cardiology, and echocardiography and is active in promoting cardiovascular health to the public to lay audiences. She has hosted “Perspectives in Women’s Health”, Mayo Clinic’s continuing medical education video-teleconference series since 1998 and in 2004, co-produced the Emmy-nominated PBS show, “Call to Action: Women and Heart Disease”. Doctor Hayes is past-president and an active volunteer for the American Heart Association, Olmsted Division. She is a member of a number of organizations and groups involved in education, strategic planning, and program development for improvement of health care, particularly cardiovascular health, in women.
