Hoover Said Women Couldn't Do it:
Women and the FBI--Fighting Crime and
Breaking Glass Ceilings
May 14, 2008

Register Now!
      Deb Pierce
      Retired FBI
Deputy Assistant Director, Criminal Division, Washington, D.C
      Special Agent in Charge, Minneapolis

The Federal Bureau of Investigation admitted the first female applicant to its training academy in 1972, one month after legendary FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover died. As recently as 2004, women made up only 18 percent of FBI agents and 67 percent of its administrative assistants.

Amid a culture of male activism and female support, how did retired FBI Special Agent Deborah Pierce rise to a position of prominence? A former physical education teacher and coach, Pierce was designated an FBI special agent in 1979 and later served as head of the Minneapolis office, where she was in charge of numerous investigations of suspected terrorists after 9/11.

Pierce was the first woman to make deputy assistant in the Bureau’s Criminal Division in Washington, D.C., and to date remains the highest ranking woman to have held that position. Hoover famously proclaimed that women “could never gunfight.” Join Deborah Pierce and radio host Ruth Koscielak ’78 to learn how confident, authentic leadership helped this special agent serve her country and her career.

Our Northern Stars Leadership Breakfast is facilitated by St. Catherine alumna, Ruth Koscielak ’78. The event is held in Coeur de Catherine, Rauenhorst Hall, on the St. Paul campus.

"Because of the nature of the duties our Special Agents are called upon to perform, we do not employ women in this position. We must have Agents who are qualified to cope with any situation they may face."
      Director J. Edgar Hoover , in a letter dated April 16, 1971.
