Ways to Get Involved

Seminars
Chemistry seminars are given by junior and senior chemistry majors presenting topics based on research or current issues in chemistry. Students give a 20-25 minute presentation their junior year and 35-40 minute presentation their senior year. Visitors are encouraged to attend! Seminar takes place usually every Friday at 1:30 in Mendel 215 with snacks as well! The Fall 2008 schedule can be found here.

If you are thinking about becoming a chemistry major, please come visit some seminars, as this wil give you an indication of what juniors and seniors are studying and interested in. You will also be able to talk with other chemistry majors as well as professors about the chemistry major.

Chemistry Club
We also have a chemistry club that meets after seminars. To get more information about chemistry club, email chemistry@stkate.edu. You don't have to be a chemistry major to join!!!

Graders and Lab Assistants
Most semesters there is need for students who have already taken courses such as Chem 1110, Chem 1120, and Chem 1010 to help with grading and/or to help out in the lab portions of these courses. If you have performed well in one of these courses and are interested in working with the Chemistry department in one of these capacities, let one of the faculty know. These are paid campus jobs. More importantly they provide an exceleent experience for those interested in pursuing more chemistry to learn valuable skills in both teaching and in understanding the material of these courses at a new level.

Stockroom Assistants
Most semesters we are in need of students who can help in our chemistry stockroom. These are paid campus jobs with flexible hours. Typical duties include preparing solutions and reagents for the lab courses. Usually the students prepared for this type of experience have completed Chem 1110 and Chem 1120. If you are interested in this type of work, contact our Laboratory Coordinator and Chemistry Stockroom Supervisor Sharon Eischens directly at smeischens@stkate.edu.
