"Will Studying the Classics
Get Me a Job?"

There is no course of study that can guarantee anyone a career; the purpose of a college education is to develop your knowledge base and critical thinking skills to prepare you for a life spent learning and advancing in your chosen career.

The study of the classics is an excellent way to round out any liberal arts program, and is particularly useful to those majoring in history, art history, art, theology and theater.

Latin coursework or a minor in Latin may be helpful for those in the medical field, and it is invaluable training for those preparing to go into law. Due to an enormous resurgence in interest in the study of Latin at the middle- and high-school level, there is currently a serious nationwide shortage of Latin teachers. Latin is one of the few current growth areas in secondary education.

Course Offerings

The College of St. Catherine offers:

History of Ancient Greece is scheduled for Winter 2009, and History of Rome will be offered in Winter 2010.

All of our courses are designed to incorporate relevant art from antiquity through modern times, archeological evidence and primary-source literature. We also support our students' efforts to broaden their understanding of both the ancient and the modern world through foreign-study experiences. Several recent students have studied abroad on archeological digs and cultural exchange programs.
