Critical Studies of Race and Ethnicity
Critical Studies of Race and Ethnicity (CRST) is the new, interdisciplinary program offered at the College of St. Catherine. With a strong basis in the Sociology department it involves many department in both campuses including: Art, Biology, Business Administration, Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Social Sciences, Sociology, Speech Communications, and Women's Studies. While the degree for this program is currently available at the St. Paul campus, courses are cross-listed and are available to students at both campuses.
CRST Overview
This major/minor provides students with a framework for understanding race and ethnicity in historical and contemporary, national and global contexts. Course work will engage students to analyze issues of racial and ethnic identity and perspective. Courses will also examine individual, institutional and systematic racism. Students will critique race based policies and socio-cultural representatives and will learn to more effectively communicate across lines of differences and engage in strategizing for social change. A major or minor in CRST would complement majors in any of the professions or the liberal arts. It would be particularly useful to those pursuing careers in health and human services, education, business, government, law, criminal justice or public policy.
Students are required to maintain and submit a portfolio of their work in CRST during their final semester prior to graduation.
The CRST program offers both major and minor options. Majors are required to take five cross-listed electives and minors are required to take three cross-listed electives. Courses are cross-listed for CRST within the originating department and the schedule of available courses is published online annually.
