Pharmacology for Physical Therapists
Purpose:
This course, designed for the practicing clinician covers the general principles of pharmacology including basic pharmacokinetics and drug receptors. Pharmacological management of common diagnoses seen in physical therapy practice will be covered in detail, using a case-based approach. Students will complete assignments related to their own areas of practice between class sessions. An emphasis on the impact of pharmacological agents on human physiology, function, and physical therapy intervention, and the impact of physical therapy intervention on pharmacokinetics will focus the between class assignments.

Application of Evidence in Physical Therapy Practice
Purpose:
This course is intended to develop student skills in locating, evaluating, and applying results of evidence from the medical literature to specific patient cases. While students are learning the process and application of evidence-based practice, they will also learn about the degree of support for various accepted physical therapy practices according to current literature.

Methods:
This course will highlight database search methods and critique of literature in the areas of PT outcomes measurement, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and prevention. There will be discussion and debate regarding the validity of published research. Students will demonstrate proficiency by developing critically appraised topics (CATS) applicable to their area of physical therapy practice.

Medical Screening
Purpose:
This course is intended to explore the therapist’s role an independent practitoner working within a collaborative medical model. This course will assist therapists in recognizing and identifying clinical manifestations that indicate the need for further physician referral or contact. In addition, this course will help therapists select the appropriate medical screening tools for common clinical case scenarios.

Methods:
Students will complete the didactic portion of this course independently, using a CD-ROM course developed by Dr. W. Boissonnault PT, DHSc, FAAOMPT. Students will have the opportunity to interact with Dr. L. Gilchrist PT, PhD at CSC to clarify course content. Students will demonstrate proficiency by a combination of short case-based assignments and one written case-report highlighting medical screening as a part of clinical examination.

CURRENT TOPICS
Health and Wellness
Purpose:
This course will explore the responsibilities and opportunities that physical therapists have in health promotion and wellness for children and adults. Models and theory of health promotion and wellness will be covered. Current trends leading to an increased interest in health promotion and wellness will be explored and national and local health promotion efforts will be investigated. Each student will learn how to apply the principles learned in this course to their current practice setting.

Management Project

Purpose:
This course offers students the opportunity to extend their basic understanding and skills in leadership and business-related components of clinical practice. Completion of a leadership/management project within their clinical site promotes effective involvement of the student in strengthening the business and clinical environment of their physical therapy practice. Class sessions are designed to assist students in planning and implementing a management project in program development, program evaluation, risk management or quality improvement. Emphasis is on using the relevant literature in addressing issues current in the student’s clinical practice.
