Financial Economics

What can I do with a Financial Economics degree?


Government: Departments involved in agriculture, business, finance, labor transportation, urban economics, and international trade.

Strategies: Become active in student government. Find an internship in a government agency. Plan on a graduate degree for promotion or advancement.
    Economic and Market Research: Market research firms, Consumer goods, Manufacturing firms, Business firms, Consulting firms.
      Strategies: Take courses in business, political science, survey design, computer science. Plan on graduate courses to specialize or for advancement. Acquire a business minor. Assist with canvassing or phone interviewing for charities or political campaigns. Work as a campus newspaper reporter.
        Banking and Finance: Commercial Banks, Regional Banks, Savings and Loan Associations, and other financial institutions.
        Strategies: Find an internship, develop strong analytical skills and gain computer skills. Get cashier, teller, or clerical experience. Become a financial officer or treasurer in a campus organization.

        Insurance: Insurance firms, local and home offices.

        Strategies: Gain computer and statistics skills. Minor in business. Become treasurer of an organization. Assist with fundraising. Become a student member in professional organizations. Get experience in benefits/personnel areas of corporations or insurance companies. Develop strong math and business orientation.



        Securities: National and Regional Brokerage firms, Discount brokerage houses, Commerical banks,
        Insurance companies.

        Strategies: Plan on getting MBA. Focus on sales. Get a business minor and take finance classes. Join an investment club. Assist with telephone solicitations.

        Consulting: Management consulting firms, Independent consulting.

        Strategies: Acquire experience with government or business. Plan on a graduate degree in your area of interest.

        Teaching: Secondary public and private schools, Colleges and University

        Strategies: Obtain a teaching certificate. Colleges and University teaching requires Ph.D. and extensive publication for tenure and professorship.

          Retailing: Department, grocery, drug, specialty, and variety store chains.

          Strategies: Get retail or sales experience. Demonstrate enthusiasm and flexibility. Secure leadership positions in campus organizations. Earn a business minor. Become treasurer in an organization. Get a sales position on the campus newspaper. Find an internship.
