Sister Ann Harvey, CSJ, founded the Early Childhood Montessori Center at St. Catherine Univesity. In remembrance of her, funds from an endowment provide for two annual Education Department events, the Sister Ann Harvey Lecture Series and the Author's Visit.

Sister Ann Harvey Lecture Series

Each year the Sister Ann Harvey Endowment brings an educator of high merit to lecture to the St. Catherine University community and friends. Past lecturers include: Howard Gardner, Jonathan Kozol, James Comer, Sharon Kagan, Tomie dePaola, Marian Wright Edelman, Janet Gonzalez-Mena, Dr. David Walsh and Lois Lowry.

Author's Visit

From noon to 1 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon in March, an author or illustrator of children's books comes for a "visit" to talk about his/her creative process. Authors and illustrators who have come are: Ann Monson, Peggie Carlson, Harry Potter illustrator, Mary Grandpre, Kate DiCamillo, Karen Ritz, Terry Hokenson and Jane Resh Thomas. This is an informal event with opportunities for participants to talk with author/illustrator guests.

STUDENT TEACHING INTAKE MEETING

If you are planning on student teaching in Fall 2010 or Winter 2011, you must attend one of the following MANDATORY meetings:
Saturday, October 31 12-1 Mendel 214
or
Monday, November 2 12-1 Mendel 214

VERY IMPORTANT: CHANGES TO LICENSURE BEGINNING FALL 2009

The following licenses will no longer be offered:
  • Music Education (K-12)
  • French (K-12)
  • Theatre Arts (K-12)

Please Note: Candidates who have been admitted to these programs must have courses completed by May 2011. No new candidates will be admitted to these licensure areas beginning fall 2009.

Elementary Education Licensure Requirements for Students in the Master of Arts in Education Program – Initial Licensure:

Beginning Fall 2009, all Elementary Education Licensure Candidates in the MAED Initial Licensure program must meet Minnesota Board of Teaching requirements associated with the teaching of science and scientific inquiry. This requirement will be met by enrolling in the following courses:
1) BIOL 1110: Environmental Biology (4 credits);
2) CHEM 1000: Chemistry of Life (4 credits); and
3) PHYS 1200: Makin' and Breakin' - Engineering in Your World (4 credits) (Formerly designated at INDI 1110)

This requirement also applies to all graduate students beginning the professional sequence with EDUC 5070 Teachers as Leaders in fall 2009.

Elementary Education Licensure Requirements in Undergraduate and Second Major Certificate Programs:
Beginning Fall 2009, all Elementary Education Licensure Candidates in the Undergraduate and Second Major Certificate programs must meet Minnesota Board of Teaching requirements associated with the teaching of science and scientific inquiry. This requirement will be met by enrolling in the following courses:
1) BIOL 1110: Environmental Biology (4 credits);
2) CHEM 1000: Chemistry of Life (4 credits); and
3) PHYS 1200: Makin' and Breakin' - Engineering in Your World (4 credits) (Formerly designated as INDI 1110)

This requirement applies to any elementary education licensure candidate who has not been formally admitted to the Education Department (Note: Admission to the College does not include formal admission to the Education Department).

The courses listed below apply to any licensure candidate taking the middle level science specialty who has not been formally admitted to the Education Department by fall 2009 (Note: Admission to St. Catherine University does not include formal admission to the Education Department).

Middle Level Specialty Science – the following science content courses are required for this licensure:
o Biology - BIOL1210 General Biology I (4 credits);
BIOL1220 General Biology II (4 credits);
o Chemistry - CHEM1110 General Chemistry I (4 credits);
CHEM 1120 General Chemistry II (4 credits);
o Physics - PHYS1040 Astronomy (4 credits);
PHYS1080 Physics for the Health Sciences I (4 credits); and
PHYS1090 Physics for the Health Sciences II (4 credits)

Application/Petition to the Education Department
Please note the following dates for Application to the Education Department.

Petition deadlines are as follows (no exceptions):
October 15 - Day Program
May 1 - Weekend Program
If the deadline falls on a Saturday or Sunday, petition packets are due no later then 3 p.m. the preceding Friday.

2M students use the application date of the specific program, for example if you are a 2M student in the Day Program you need to apply by October 15; if you are a 2M student in the WEC Program, then the date is May 1.

Graduate students are admitted to the Education Department through their application to the Admissions to the University.

Please make sure that you have all appropriate paperwork completed by the specific deadline for your program. All forms and checklists can be found in the Education Department office, Mendel 201.

Title II Regulations

The St. Catherine University is in full compliance with Title II regulations and its reporting structure. Based on scores reported for the 2007-2008 reporting period, St. Catherine's institutional pass rate is 88%. The statewide pass rate is 91%.
