Sister Ann Harvey, CSJ, founded the Early Childhood Montessori Center at the College of St. Catherine. In remembrance of her, funds from an endowment provide for two annual Education Department events, the Sister Ann Harvey Lecture Series and the Author's Visit.

Sister Ann Harvey Lecture Series

Each year the Sister Ann Harvey Endowment brings an educator of high merit to lecture to the College of St. Catherine community and friends. Past lecturers include: Howard Gardner, Jonathan Kozol, James Comer, Sharon Kagan, Tomie dePaola, Marian Wright Edelman, Janet Gonzalez-Mena, Dr. David Walsh and Lois Lowry.

Author's Visit

From noon to 1 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon in March, an author or illustrator of children's books comes for a "visit" to talk about his/her creative process. Authors and illustrators who have come are: Ann Monson, Peggie Carlson, Harry Potter illustrator, Mary Grandpre, Kate DiCamillo, Karen Ritz, Terry Hokenson and Jane Resh Thomas. This is an informal event with opportunities for participants to talk with author/illustrator guests.

Student Teaching Meeting - August 26, 2008

If you are student teaching in Fall 2008, there is a mandatory meeting on Tuesday, August 26 from 4-6 pm in Mendel 106. You will meet your college supervisor and get important student teaching information.

ATTENTION - New Education Students' Orientation


The Education Department will hold the following required orientations for new Education students (not including Montessori):

DAY Student Orientation – Thursday, September 4, 2008 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in Mendel Hall room 106.

WEC
/GRAD Student Orientation – Saturday, September 6, 2008 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. in Mendel Hall room 106.

During the orientation, policies, procedures and expectations we will reviewed.

If you are a DAY student and cannot attend on September 4, please feel free to come to the WEC/GRAD orientation on September 6.

If you are a WEC/GRAD student and cannot attend on September 6, please feel free to come to the DAY orientation on September 4.

It is required that you attend one of these orientation sessions.


FYI - There will not be any makeup sessions for orientation.


Congratulations to the Sister Ann Harvey Action Research Award winners

Mary Harding and Becky Haven were awarded the Sister Ann Harvey Action Research Award. Patti and Joe Strukel received honorable mention. Copies of the winning papers are attached.

Education Department Changes

After almost 15 years of leading the Education Department, Linda Distad has decided to leave her position as Associate Dean and return to full-time teaching at the College. Beginning in the fall, she will teach the elementary social studies methods class and then in the winter, will teach a section of Global Search for Justice.

Dr. Tony Murphy has agreed to step into the Associate Dean's position, as of June 1. Dr. Murphy arrived in the St. Kate's Education Department in August 2001. He started as an assistant professor and was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor beginning 2007-08

Title II Regulations

The College of St. Catherine is in full compliance with Title II regulations and its reporting structure. Based on scores reported for the 2006-2007 reporting period, St. Catherine's institutional pass rate is 93%. The statewide pass rate is 92%.
