Student Teaching Intervention Policy

A student teacher may experience problems during student teaching. The problem may be easily solved at the school. When a student teacher experiences a serious problem an intervention will be arranged. There are several ways that a report about a problem may come to the attention of the Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Education or the Student Teaching Office. These problems may be characterized by the student teacher not meeting the Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice on the Student Teaching Evaluation form, not meeting Dispositional Standards, or the children are being adversely affected.

STEP 1
1. The cooperating teacher may note that the student teacher is not meeting standards
2. The university supervisor may note that the student teacher is not meeting standards
3. The student teacher may note that there is an issue from her/his perspective, which should be discussed with her/his university supervisor

STEP 2
1. The student teaching report form is completed by the university supervisor and submitted to the Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Programs (DGUP).
2. The DGUP meets with the student teacher at the school, or at SCU, with the supervisor, the cooperating teacher, or both.
3. The Professional Development Plan Form (PDP) will be completed and signed at the meeting
4. The student teacher is allowed time to reach the personal goals from the PDP.
5. The Director will document, in writing, a summary of the meeting and place the signed PDP and the meeting notes in the student teacher’s file.

STEP 3
1. If the personal goals from the Professional Development Plan (PDP) are not met within the agreed timeline, the student teaching experience is terminated, and a grade of U is assigned.
2. Following the termination, the student and Director (DGUP) will meet to discuss options. In this meeting, the student will be presented with options that may include:
a. An opportunity to complete a second experience with a revised PDP (usually in the following semester).
b. Withdraw from a future student teaching.
c. Withdraw from the program.
3. In the event a second placement is granted, it will be noted that this is a final opportunity to complete student teaching. A second unsuccessful attempt will result in termination from the program. The implications of this termination may result in:
a. Failure to graduate with an Elementary Education major (undergraduate), or, in the case of a graduate student, a Master’s degree. In the case of undergraduate grade 5-12 or K-12, graduation is possible, and would be discussed.
b. Failure to be eligible for teaching licensure.
