Undergraduate Academic and Professional Standards

In order to remain in good standing in the education program, the student must fulfill the following:

1. Maintain an overall 2.5 grade point average;
2. Earn a grade of C- or better in each education course; and
3. Successfully complete each fieldwork assignment.

A student is placed on probation for one term by the education program if:
1. A grade of C- or less has been earned in any course; or
2. The overall GPA is less than 2.5.

The Admissions & Retention committee will identify the conditions of academic probation in writing. Failure to meet the written conditions for academic probation or to bring the grade point average to 2.5 by the end of the term on probation will
result in automatic dismissal from the program under ordinary circumstances.

A student on probation is automatically dismissed from the program for academic reasons if:
1. Overall GPA is less than 2.5 by the end of the term on probation; or
2. Conditions for academic probation are not met.

Under extraordinary circumstances, the student may petition in writing to repeat the course, but may not take the next courses in sequence unless the petition has been approved and the conditions for continuance agreed upon by the student. Decisions regarding petitions will be made by the department faculty.

A student who receives a grade of D or F may repeat the course once only; the grade of D or F will be carried on the transcript, but only the grade that replaces the D or F will be calculated in the GPA. Courses for which a grade of C- or above have been
received may not be repeated. The Program Director and retention committee reserve the right to deny registration to any student who is not progressing satisfactorily toward a degree or who does not meet the above criteria.

In addition to academic reasons for dismissal, a student may be dismissed from the education program for:

1. Violation of the National Educational Association (NEA) code of ethics and the Minnesota Board of Teaching (BOT) code of ethics;
2. Violation of the college policy on academic integrity: The College of St. Catherinešs mission provides for excellence in education through the search for truth and justice. According to the provisions of this mission, the college expects all students and faculty to uphold the highest standards of academic integrity. Any act of academic dishonesty threatens the value of all scholastic endeavor. The complete document on academic
integrity, including the process for implementation, may be found in LeGuide, the student guide to policies, procedures and rules at the College of St. Catherine; or
3. Violation of the college policy on student conduct. The complete document on student conduct, including the process for implementation, may be found in LeGuide, the student guide to policies, procedures and rules at the College of St. Catherine.

The above policies have been adopted to protect the student, the department, the college, and the profession.
